Portland, Oregon singer-songwriter Mcamp released his new smooth single “sexy in the morning” yesterday. The 21-year-old artist fused a Motown inspired groove with a laid back vibe and falsetto vocals to showcase his ability to paint picture-perfect moments through his soulful lyricism with this single. A self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, he tells the story of early mornings waking up next to the person you love.
He incorporates elements of hip-hop and pop to create a unique bedroom R&B feel that displays the genre-blending artist’s versatility and range when it comes to production, lyricism, and vocal range.
Mcamp shared with Beyond the Stage (BTS) what the single means to him.
“‘Sexy in the morning’ is really just an artifact of those perfect mornings you spend with your significant other. It’s meant to feel like that – a little bit tired, but you’re in the mood. It’s a little dreamy and a little sexy. It’s meant to really just feel good, and make you relax. That’s kind of what it means to me. It’s that perfectly imperfect sort of vibe. There’s really nothing better.”

The multi-faceted artist mixes, masters, and produces all of his own music, helping him build quite the discography of R&B love songs. His hit single “Speed Dial No. 1,” has accumulated nearly 900,000 plays across streaming platforms since its release. He has also reached a huge milestone by amassing over 20 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify alone.
Because of his constantly growing collection of romantic music, BTS asked the young artist if his love songs are written for someone in particular or if he’s just inspired by love.
“I think my songs can really go either way, but generally I would say there’s some non-fiction involved,” Mcamp said. “I like to be inspired by something specific when I’m writing these love songs. It can be current relationships, past relationships, or even making a story out of that insignificant interaction I had at the grocery store. It really depends. Also, one powerful tool I use in songwriting is disguising deeper meanings behind the facade of a relationship. Like a metaphor. You can write about so many things that way, and it adds another layer of depth to the song. Listeners then have another level to uncover to really understand the song. It can be really dope to write in that way.”
Mcamp’s music is heavily influenced by Smokey Robinson, Pharrell, and D’Angelo. Its sound is the perfect blend of Indie-alternative and R&B with hints of pop and hip-hop. These elements come together to make a soulful yet laid-back and even calming moment. While his discography is still small, he has been creating for years and loves expanding his work. He has even been able to share this experience with other artists, including popular R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Babyface. Mcamp got to play his music for the 11-time Grammy Award winner in the studio.
He spoke about the experience with BTS.
“Being in the studio with Babyface was one of those experiences that just sort of flash before your eyes. It was insane. It’s honestly wild to think that it happened – I was so nervous that day that looking back it all just sort of feels like a blur. I got to play some songs for him. To me, just being in the room with someone that influential in music was so dope and such a great learning experience. Even throughout the hour or so I was with him, I gained a lot of wisdom. Also, Babyface just had such a relaxed, assured demeanor. He’s cool, confident, and collected. He really is the man.”
As Mcamp captures the attention of not only listeners across streaming platforms, but also fellow R&B artists, we encourage you to keep up with him in 2021! He’s bound to continue on his path of creating beautiful and passionate music, which will hopefully take him to the top of the charts.
