Singer-songwriter Maggie Andrew dropped her newest song, “Survival Mode.” It is the third and final part of her trilogy project.
“Survival Mode” is a poignant and emotional song where Andrew finds comfort and acceptance while in a state of loneliness, but at the same time, she does not want to be forgotten.
The music video encapsulates and reflects the tone and theme of the song perfectly. With the help of Grammy-nominated director, Andy Hines (directed for Kanye West, Lizzo & more), the video presents Andrew sitting alone in a bathtub, which is used to symbolically show a cleanse of her fears and letting go of her pain.
It’s a deeply honest and vulnerable song that strikes an emotional cord. The single is much stripped-back and vocal-focused, allowing you to hear the richness and soul in her voice.
The whole trilogy tells a story of a woman reclaiming herself and turning trauma into triumph. Part one, “Honda Civic,” is about Maggie leaving her old life behind. Part two, “ILMIHM,” is her going through the motions — expressing feelings of loving and hating herself. Part 3 is the ultimate conclusion to the trilogy as her story comes full circle, coming to terms with herself and leaving her troubles a stronger person than she was before.
This trilogy project is something that means a lot to Andrew. In a press release, she speaks more on the purpose behind it:
“I want this to be a segue for people to know they’re not alone, they have someone, I’m here…I’m not a victim of anything that happened to me; all those people are losers. Now I’m here. This is my calling to be here and to be this person who is a strong symbol of someone who can go through all that trauma and still be powerful.”
The Canadian-born artist made her independent debut in 2019 with the release of her first single, “Sleep 4Ever” featuring blackbear, which is sitting at over 2 million streams on Spotify. Ever since, she’s been running with serious momentum, impressing audiences with each song she releases.
With a powerful showing from her trilogy project, who knows what else she has in store for us. Whatever it is, we can’t wait. The sky is the limit for her.
