Singer-songwriter Mae Krell released their latest single, “colorblind,” on Friday. It is a soft pop track that explores the deep heartbreak after the end of a relationship. Krell writes with piercing, emotional detail that you understand and feel their pain, as if you’re going through it with them.
With Jakob Leventhal behind the production, Krell showcases their dreamy vocals over a swaying, airy guitar and a calm drum beat. The single just puts you in a state of peace.
The 22-year-old artist speaks on the inspiration behind the song in a press release:
“I wrote ‘colorblind’ in the midst of what I thought was going to be the end of a relationship with the first girl I ever truly fell in love with...I’ll be the first to admit that I feel everything too much, but during the couple of days that this was going on, I really felt like the world was ending. I was wildly sad while also being very restless in a way that I had never experienced before.”
Can’t say that we haven’t been there before. We get in our own heads a lot of times and just tend to overthink things.
This is their most recent single after releasing “snow” back in April. It’s a much upbeat and lively tune that expresses their struggle with healing.
The Brooklyn native returned to the music scene in early 2020 after taking a two-year hiatus. Since then, they’ve continued to show their development as a musician. In addition to being an artist, they helped photograph for Rolling Stone, Sony RCA and more. They even started their own marketing and PR company called Bitch Mgmt. So they’re doing a little bit of everything.
What’s impressive with each song they release is their strong and raw storytelling. Krell just knows how to paint an image with words. It’s poetic. Maybe it’s important to note that they were inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Phoebe Bridges and Gregory Alan Isakov. It all makes sense now.
Krell’s music is something special. We’re excited to see what others stories they’re ready to share with the world.
