We all have our favorites, but why should you venture into something else than what you’re used to? Simple. It can do you more good than you thought.
As we become older, we develop favorites: food, colors, books and yes, music. As we become adults we might budge here and there but often things like music tastes tend to stay the same. There are so many types of music out there, the idea of listing every single genre is more than likely impossible. Heck, metal has like 20 sub-genres, along with punk and jazz. Really, with so many different types of music to listen to the possibilities are endless!
Psychologists coined a term for people are able to switch to different of genres of music. These folks are called “bimusical”. People who are deemed bimusical tend to have different brains. Those who are used to listen to different types of music are capable of multitasking. Bimusical folks, as well as people who can speak multiple languages, are also capable of using their emotions to switch between one genre and the other.
Listening to more than one genre can make us more relatable to others. Music is a great way in getting to know someone. Many relationships form based on whether or not both like the same thing. If someone wants to make friends outside of their circle, listening to multicultural music or a genre they may dislike might prove to be worthwhile. Whatever it is, music makes for great conversation!
Sometimes it’s difficult for folks to step out of what they’re comfortable with. For many, treading through unfamiliar waters may seem daunting at best. What better way in knowing ourselves better than by trying something new? What’s to lose? An open mind? New friends? Conversation pieces? Can’t beat that. So go out there, listen to something new! It might be good for you.
