A week ago, TikTok songwriter, Leith Ross released their latest single “Guts.”
The indie artist blew up on TikTok in August of 2021 for their song “We’ll Never Have Sex,” which now has over 41 million streams on Spotify. Ever since, Ross has gathered a hefty following of devoted listeners through social media. Their most recent single, “Guts,” is, in Ross’s words, full of “rage, hurt, defeat, betrayal, and even forgiveness.” They sing, “You thought you were an actor/Claimed a hammered body double/Then you wrote yourself a letter/To my name for all your trouble.” In their journey of understanding all of those complex and sometimes contradictory feelings, Ross accompanied the song with a trigger warning, explaining that the lyrics are about their experience with sexual violence. Ross first posted the song in June of 2021 along with the caption, “wrote this about a terrible man who had a terrible effect on my life but playing it is so therapeutic.” In their most personal and vulnerable piece, Ross has left fans feeling less alone. Not only has Ross used their platform to celebrate the queer community, but with this song, they’ve also advocated for all victims of sexual abuse through their valued honesty.
Along with the release of their single, Ross also announced their debut album, To Learn, which will come out on May 19th. The album encompasses how the artist has dealt with major changes in their life and the coming-of-age moments of growth and loss. We’re looking forward to hearing the “Guts” and the full album on their upcoming UK/US tour.
