The Super Bowl halftime performances are filled with joyful surprises. Beyonce reunited Destiny’s Child, Lady Gaga jumped off a stadium, and Adam Levine… eh, that one took a weird turn for television. Now it’s The Weeknd’s turn and there is a high bar set by the previous artists. He cannot do this job alone, so who will be there to back him up on February 7th?
Top Candidates
Rosalia
What’s better than one strong vocalist? Two. For those who do not know Rosalia, she was named the most influential musician in Spain by Forbes in December. In the same month, she was featured in a remix of “Blinding Lights”. Her touch of new flamenco brought a new, diverse take on the American-based single. The harmony between the two singers during the chorus is enough to turn viewers’ heads. For a sport solely based in America, football can benefit from the addition of cultural diversity to its halftime show.
Daft Punk
“Starboy” is bound to be performed, so the EDM group is a strong candidate to back up The Weeknd. Halftime shows are also visual spectacles filled with astonishing light shows. Daft Punk can compliment that element of the performance with their tech-driven beats.
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar could have carried a Super Bowl performance on his own. However, his popularity does not rule him out. The two artists collaborated for the soundtrack to Marvel’s Black Panther (2018). If Kendrick appeared to perform “Pray For Me” as the stage glowed purple, it would be an honorable way to remember the late Chadwick Boseman.
Wild Card Picks
Lana del Rey
The world is preparing for Lana del Rey’s upcoming new album Chemtrails Over the Country Club. Therefore, her momentum is high and could match Rosalia’s hype. These two singing a duet version of any The Weeknd song could yield a collaboration that listeners did not know they wanted.
Kid Cudi
After the surprise release of Man On the Moon III, the Rager himself Kid Cudi has hummed his way back into the music world’s heart in 2020. Cudi’s style of rapping, singing, and humming can strongly support The Weeknd on some tracks.
Post Malone
Post Malone is known for both his music and his Bud Light commercials. An appearance by him would double the star power of the halftime show.
The show can go in any director no matter who appears. There could be a surprise appearance that no one will ever think to predict. After all, it is one of the biggest musical events of the year. As long as The Weeknd does not get set on fire, his halftime show can remain stable.
