On a Wednesday night in St. Louis, The Lumineers played to a near-capacity arena in the middle of a winter storm advisory. Opening with Sleep on the Floor, the first track off their sophomore album, set the tone for the night. Returning in 2019 with their album III, the Lumineers 2-hour set felt like it lasted 5 minutes. From more upbeat hits like “Ophelia” and “Gloria,” to more intimate moments with songs like “Slow it Down” and “It Wasn’t Easy to Be Happy For You,” the Lumineers delivered it all.
One of the most profound moments of the set came from a brief moment between songs, where lead singer Wesley took a moment to talk about caring for his mom, who was an addict, where he said: “standing up against addiction is like standing up against an ocean.” Adding that even if these songs helped just one other person, it would be enough. From the staging and theatrics of the show to the quieter moments that were just Wesley and his guitar, the night felt encapsulated inside “Ophelia,” the second encore song, with the entire arena crowd holding on to every word. As The Lumineers have moved on from more intimate venues into this arena world tour, it really is the full circle of everything The Lumineers music stands for and encompasses, and is definitely a tour that you don’t want to miss.
