Eric Nam closed out the North American leg of his Before We Begin tour in San Francisco earlier this month. Though unknown at the time, this would be The Warfield’s, and Nam’s, last live performance before COVID-19 restrictions took effect. And while we all might be missing the joy of live music, if anyone had to close out this Bay Area concert season, we’re glad it was Eric Nam.
Though born and raised in Atlanta, Nam found initial stardom in Korea. After competing on a Korean singing competition show at age 23, Nam signed to a label and has garnered impressive success in the years since.
Yet Nam is far from a typical k-pop story. Before taking the turn to entertainment, Nam had an offer at a consulting firm, and even worked at a social collective in India. Even now, Nam’s entrepreneurial spirit has him participating in all kinds of media. Most recently, Nam launched a Facebook Watch variety show “Hwaiting!”, featuring k-pop stars like Amber Liu.
Now, the ambitious singer is working to bring a new style to the world of k-pop. By the looks of the positively buzzing crowd at The Warfield, Nam’s experimentation is working. To call his fans enthusiastic would be a criminal understatement. The crowded venue floor brimmed with excitement, eventually erupting into chants of “Eric!” as fans impatiently waited for their idol to take the stage.
Onstage, Nam was joined by several dancers for his more upbeat tunes. Nam showcased precise choreography, a further testament to his impressive array of skills. Moving effortlessly between high-energy anthems and crooning R&B ballads, the versatile singer proved himself again and again as a force to be reckoned with. Though coronavirus cut touring short, it’s only a matter of time before Nam returns to dominate his creative domains.
