Today marks the final New Music Friday of a sonically stacked January–a month that’s teed up 2023 to deliver on fans expectations. This week also brings banging new tracks from established chart toppers to fresh faces proving why they deserve to be next.
“Honey” – Samia
A perfect tune for a day at the park when you need a chill day.
icons with style powerful enough to help estranged lovers heal on their own.
“LUV (I KNOW I WANT THIS FOR REAL)” – Q
What makes us love Q is their ability to make modern classics full of nostalgia. This song is the perfect cross between Stevie B and Nice & Wild. IYKYK.
KSI featuring Oliver Tree – “Voices”
London-based KSI has now written a breakup song with popular genre-defying singer Oliver Tree months after he released a #1 UK song. It’s hard to imagine anyone on a higher level right now as KSI gears up for his third full-length record. “Voices” is about both KSI’s breakup and the mental health struggles he says he battled after.
“I thought I was fine, but I had these voices in my head telling me I wasn’t as happy as I thought I was,” KSI said in a release.
Oliver Tree added that the song details the lies people tell themselves when they go from loving someone to waking up in a cold bed alone.
This isn’t just a breakup song, it’s a craft by two modern
“Sandcastles” – Ray Vaughn ft. Ab-Soul
This track is such a good medley between two of the most talented modern rap artists and serves as a great single for the new year.
Tom Odell featuring Aurora – “Butterflies”
Tom Odell says it’s always been a dream of his to collaborate with Norwegian star Aurora. Now the two have teamed up to write a song that’ll bring a familiar ‘butterfly’ feeling to those who’ve spent an entire day with someone they really like only to get to the end of the adventure and say goodbye. There’s a feeling of longing for the day to never end, but a contentedness that such a magical thing happened.
Odell and Aurora have gentle voices only sweetened by soft piano that captures the song’s theme even when their voices fall silent. The sound serves as a companion to Odell’s most recent album Best Day Of My Life which was written entirely on piano.
“In the Dark” – Biig Piig
She’s done it again. As part of the short but sweet album, “Bubblegum,” this track is a multi-genre masterpiece.
“Celestial” – Naomi Sharon
There’s no better way to describe this song than the word, celestial. This song sounds like the feeling of looking at stardust and the moon in the night sky.
corook – “the dog”
Here’s a hypothetical on this Friday: if a couple gets a dog and later breaks up, who gets the dog? Self-proclaimed “huge f’ing dork” corook answers this question after going through a laundry list of possessions her and her ex should split after their split.
The ex gets the bed sheets and recipes, corook will keep the knives and plates. You’ll have to listen for yourself to find out who gets to keep the dog and the knife twisting reason why.
“Two Tens” – Cordae ft. Anderson .Paak
This track is beautifully written. What sounds like a back-and-forth between the two artists, this song’s flow is unmatched.
“Silent Running” – Gorillaz ft. Adeleye Omotayo
If you like the song “Baby Queen” by Gorillaz, then you’ll love this track. It’s got the same mellow yet upbeat sound and leads the Gorillaz to their new sound.
SG Lewis – AudioLust & HigherLove
SG Lewis’ second full length album has a fuller, rocking sound compared to his first hip swinging dance record. That’s thanks to the addition of a full backing band and a larger theme taking different shapes and sounds throughout. Lewis himself says the record is about egotistical visions of love and a richer, more authentic one. Him and his band give sound to those feelings and a guarantee that crowds will dance along.
Rowan Drake – “Elephant In The Room”
Internet star and rising musician Rowan Drake discusses the feeling of knowing a relationship is nearing its end but refusing to address it and only prolonging heartbreak in his newest single. His fanbase is growing as quickly as his music career, which began after his snowboarding career dreams were crushed by an injury and he turned to playing for small crowds. Now the world is listening to what he’s trying to say, but has been avoiding this whole time.
