We’re only halfway through February and it’s already been a killer month packed with fresh songs to love–and this New Music Friday is no exception. From Lana Del Ray to Aly & AJ, here are this week’s top releases.
“Always Get This Way” by The Aces
After the release of “Girls Make Me Wanna Die” last June, fans have anticipated their next release. “Always Get This Way” is a teenage angst bop that’s reminiscent of Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun.” The girl group also surprised fans by announcing their third full-length album, I’ve Loved You For So Long will arrive June 2nd.
“Parched” by Olive Klug
You might have seen them on TikTok with popular songs like “Coming of Age” and “Raining in June.” Now, folk artist Olive Klug is highlighting unfulfilling relationships and mixed messages in “Parched.” In their own Joni Mitchell-esqe way, Klug’s pensive lyricism demands to be listened to.
“After Hours” by Aly & AJ
“After Hours” is the titular song off of the sister’s latest EP. An almost country song, “After Hours” is written for those that stay up late to escape the same old day-to-day routine. The song is part of an album, With Love From, which is set to release on March 15th.
“Sugar” by Riton feat. Bree Runway
Calling all sweet tooths! “Sugar” by UK pop producer, Riton, samples 50 Cent’s classic “Candy Shop.” With vocals featuring Bree Runway, “Sugar” is an electronic treat that makes us all want to dance.
“Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)” by Daisy Jones & The Six
Unlike any of the other songs on the list, “Look At Us Now (Honeycomb)” is a real song by a fictional band. This song, along with their other most recent release, “Regret Me,” is set to be featured in Prime’s highly-anticipated show, “Daisy Jones & The Six.” In the spirit of bringing the 70s back to life, Daisy Jones & The Six utilizes Buckingham-like guitar lines and complex rock harmonies. We can’t wait until March 3rd to hear (and see) the whole project.
“I Want You” by Icona Pop and Galantis
“I Want You” is a galactic explosion, signifying a new era for the electro-pop duo, Icona Pop. With the production help of DJ duo, Galantis, the song is sure to be the soundtrack to all the main character moments.
“Terrestrial Man” by Jack Van Cleaf
It’s a good week for folk artists. Singer-songwriter, Jack Van Cleaf, released “Terrestrial Man,” a tearful folk-rock piece about missing the people that make up home. He sings, “My home’s a location between destinations/Sometimes I wish that I’d never land.” Within his intense lyrics, building percussion and steady guitar, Van Cleaf tells us about the fear of being without a home. After being away for so long, the artist sings about having to make an otherworldly place seem familiar.
“Only Me” by Dom Fera
Filmmaker and musician, Dom Fera, released his 80s-sounding “Only Me” on Thursday and it’s remained on repeat for 24 hours. Fera has yet to release a full album, but you can bet we’ll still be here when he does.
“Heaven” by Niall Horan
As an introduction to his upcoming album, The Show, Horan dropped the lead single, “Heaven,” today. Upon his return, Horan actually has us ascending with his golden voice and smitten lyrics. He sings, “Even if our love starts to grow out of control/And you and me go up in flames/Heaven won’t be the same.” Horan touches on how Heaven would be unbearable without a certain someone to share it with.
“A&W” by Lana Del Ray
While fans are patiently awaiting Lana Del Ray’s new album to release on March 24th, the indie-pop princess released her newest single “A&W” this week. Longer than most of her tracks, the song begins with Del Ray’s voice floating on top of a married piano and guitar line. Coming in at seven minutes and 43 seconds, “A&W” is her most experimental work yet. After the four-minute mark, Del Ray does a full 180, dropping listeners into a heavy trap beat. The song is an experience, bringing a new perspective to the conflict between being desirable and being loved.
