The sweet scents of spring finally fill the air and the sounds accompanying this season are on display like flower blossoms; this is New Music Friday.
Indigo De Souza – All of This Will End
Twenty-five year-old Indigo De Souza’s third LP elevates the stunning singer to another high. Her remarkable vocal performances take an even higher step this go-around.
Listeners will want to stick around to the end to hear closer, lead single and De Souza’s best-ever track “Younger & Dumber.”
An increasing amount of young people feel jaded over love. From the first loss of innocence when diving headfirst into emotional and physical relationships with a possible beau, new feelings feel old too quickly for too many.
De Souza’s personal account of how excitement turns numb may be the clearest any writer has recounted this dissociative feeling.
“When I was younger, younger and dumber // Built like a flower // You came to pick me from out of the city // You turned me sour.”
She wastes no time setting the album’s tone. There is no build up on the record’s opener “Time Back.” De Souza is singing from the getgo talking about past friendships dying and moving forward with hope in her heart.
But not everything is sunshine and rainbows. This is an Indigo De Souza record after all. She’ll tell anyone that did her dirty how much they suck, f*cked her up, and all things in between.
She even addresses perception, sexuality and body image. According to De Souza, the world ‘ain’t gonna care’ about what you’re wearing, your age, weight or anything about outward physical appearance.
De Souza’s poetry paints an intimate portrait of herself and her perceptions.
When someone so young releases a potent and powerful album, which only elevates her and is better than her two prior great records, it has to be considered among the best released all year.
All of This Will End will end up on countless top ten record of the year lists. De Souza makes it clear that she is not her body. She’s a mastermind and visionary.
For a record designed to deflect others’ perceptions, De Souza makes it difficult to perceive her as anything other than great.
Niall Horan – “Meltdown”
There’s no debating Niall Horan’s legacy.
Only 29, Horan’s latest single “Meltdown” has fans buzzing about another former One Directioner’s release.
It even has an accompanying lyric video.
It’s a total head bopper. There’s a constant beat under Horan’s vocals, only going silent for a moment while Horan hits the chorus to say “When it all melts down, I’ll be there,” just like he always has been.
Moreish Idols – Lock Eyes and Collide
South London’s Moreish Idols put some shining synths under soft vocals and loud guitars (and even a saxophone) on their second EP.
Lock Eyes and Collide isn’t only a new release to set the tone for prog rock this summer–but a collector’s item for physical music lovers too.
That’s because it’s released on legendary producer Dan Carey’s Speedy Wunderground label…so of course this EP got a limited 12’ release. Nuff’ said.
Paulina – “best friend”
Today BTS Magazine is happy to share that our staff writer Paulina has self released her debut single “best friend.”
Songs about best friends can go in any direction: the beauty of friendship, the past, a dissipating partnership and even the joy of reconnecting.
The possibilities are endless and Paulina chose to write about what happens when two best friends hook up after a night out…and the emotional complexities that follow.
Her produced-with-purpose vocals stand out and her lyrics set the scene:
“What do you do when you wake up next to your best friend? // One too many cosmopolitans // You still talk about your exes // Now you’re sleeping in your bed with him // And what do you do if you think that you might like it? // Waking up on the weekend wrapped in his arms // But does he mean it?
Paulina’s words quickly unravel like anyones mind might in that situation. Racing thoughts and hitting existential crisis mode are normal, but so is the pleasure.
Which of these will you be adding to your favorite playlists today? Any we missed?
