LA Parties’ brand new single “Russian Doll” is out now, and we are here to bring you some fun facts about the new song, straight from the one man band frontman Andy Gorel.
1. It’s metaphorical.
The song, which touts a fresh vibe and strong guitar riffs, serves as an ode to shedding layers – like the traditional Russian Matryoshka dolls that fit inside one another. “We’re all human,” says Gorel, “and we should never be afraid to shed the layers that mask our insecurities.”
2. The song was actually written back in 2017.
The way Gorel tells it: “Just two days before writing the song, I had seen LÉON live. At the time, her hit single was “Surround Me.”
“The song has such a simple and uplifting chorus, and was fresh in the mind. I tried channeling that energy and the chorus fell out of me all in one go. Like a Russian Doll, the layers come off with the alcohol, yeah / Forget the alcohol, don’t dress back up.
It was one of those “look what I found” moments. I knew it was a monster chorus. So I quickly hashed out the three verses, and boom, in about 30 minutes “Russian Doll” was conceived and born.”
3. It’s based on a story with pretty solid screenplay potential, if we say so ourselves.
“At face value, it sounds like the song is strictly about sex, but the inspiration actually came from a much deeper place. It was my junior year of university at Drexel. There was a group of girls I had just met, and been hanging out a lot.”
LA Parties singer AG goes on, “I was really close with two of them, and the third one was incredibly shy – until we started drinking. The first night we went out together, she opened up completely, and we ended up hooking up. She was such a nice girl and confided in me so many things, but once she was sober again, the layers went right back on. I was a little bothered by it, and said to myself “She’s like a Russian doll,” thinking of Matryoshka dolls – those traditional wooden dolls that are layered inside one another.”
We stan a metaphor here at Beyond the Stage! Anyway, back to the story: “This girl was so cute, and so nice, but she needed the alcohol to have the confidence she has every reason to have when she’s sober. And that seems like a sad reality that a lot of people struggle with.”
4. It has a positive message about being yourself and living your truth authentically.
“When we are vulnerable we are free. It shouldn’t be lost on us why we love things like sex, drugs, and art. They are all things that make us vulnerable, and allow us to seek acceptance for who we really are. So while at surface level “Russian Doll” sounds like a quick and easy song about drinking and hooking up, it goes way beyond that. We’re all human, and we should never be afraid to shed the layers that mask our insecurities.”
