Bruce Springsteen, or “The Boss,” as he is more fondly known as, released “Letter To You” on Thursday, the title track for his upcoming album slotted to release on Oct. 23.
The song is a classic E Street Band piece, Springsteen’s backing band since 1972. The membrane-tearing crash of the drums, layered lead and rhythm guitars intertwined with the sound of the organ and the chimes from the piano all point toward the infamous sound that Springsteen and the band have made their own, that smooth mix of rock and Americana.
Even though the intro might lead one to think that it’s a song by Blue Oyster Cult with its “Fear The Reaper” style guitar and organ riff, Springsteen’s entry around the 20-second mark leaves no doubt in the listener’s mind that it is, in fact, The Boss on a comeback trail, with his second album in as many years.
In its lyrics, the song speaks of the singer who is down on his knees, writing a sort of tell-all confessional to a receiver unknown — maybe an old lover, or someone with whom the timing was just never right, who knows?
The letter is full of his findings through experience and age, everything the singer has known, all his emotions and feelings, expressing “all that my heart finds true.”
There is just something very comforting and yet sad about the song. It feels like the lyrics have the power to invoke memories of days gone by, memories which invigorate feelings that haven’t been felt in years. It makes us think of what our letters to that someone would read as if they were ever to be written.
Along with the song, a video was released as well, featuring clips of the band’s recording sessions in the studio mixed in with the footage of a man walking through a field covered in snow, all in black and white.
