Following the release of his new track, ‘Big Love’, we had a chance to speak with French DJ and producer Klingande. One of the founders of Melodic House, Klingande broke into the scene with his smash hit ‘Jubel’, which has accumulated well over 500 million plays across streaming platforms. Klingande has since released his debut album, titled The Album, which firmly established himself as one of the most innovative producers in dance music. For his new single, Klingande teamed up with singer/songwriter, Warbel, to create a catchy, feel-good track. Check out what he had to say below!
BTS: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
Klingande: People always tend to categorize me as a Tropical House artist. If I had to categorize myself, I would rather say I create Melodic House – as I’m incorporating live instruments into my music to keep my sound organic. I’m also exploring different moods and staying original to my sound.
BTS: How have you been staying busy in a time without festivals/touring?
Klingande: This year has been focused on learning more about music production. I knew I would probably never have this downtime again, so this allowed me the opportunity to perfect my skills and spend more time in the studio. I have been able to precisely define where I want to go next after the release of my first album in 2019.
BTS: Have you had any mentors that have helped you grow into the artist you are today?
Klingande: I would have loved to have a mentor, as I think this is the best way to grow and learn. I went to a music production school in London for a year in my early days. It really helped me focus on just the production side and work with artists who influenced me to create this genre of music. I also used YouTube as a learning tool when discovering more about music production. Then, after my first successful track, I was able to meet and work with amazing top-liners and producers, which was quite rewarding.
BTS: Do you have a time or place that you feel you create your best music?
Klingande: I am more comfortable, inspired, and creative in a room that has a relaxed view. I was lucky enough to produce a big part of my album in Ibiza, in a peaceful place outside of the city, and as expected it really helped me get over the writer’s block.
BTS: How did the collaboration with Wrabel come about for ‘Big Love’?
Klingande: I am a huge fan of Wrabel’s voice. I received this demo of Big Love, and immediately knew I wanted to do this song with a big chorus and high-energy vocals. Then, it was all about producing the song and bringing together both of our unique styles. I didn’t get to meet him in-studio to create the track due to the global situation, but I’m really looking forward to it when things get better!
BTS: Any artists or songs you’ve been digging lately?
Klingande: Yes! I’ve taken this time to focus on discovering a lot of new artists. Listening to music is more important than ever for me during these times.
Few jams on repeat at the moment:
BTS: What’s next for Klingande?
Klingande: After I released my debut album last year, I took this time to really focus on creating new music. ‘Big Love’ is the first of many to come in the next year, and I’ll be releasing music more consistently in the New Year. Hopefully when concerts resume, I can come back on-stage with a lot of fresh music.
Stay up to date with Klingande!
