Kim Petras is no stranger to a cheeky pop jam, and her new single might just be her cheekiest cut yet. After premiering live at the MTV EMAs and subsequently going viral on TikTok, the funky “Coconuts” has finally been released in full. Its disco-inspired production and hilarious lyrics make for an infectious combination, and show Petras embracing her confidence and womanhood like never before.
The track follows the release of Petras’ other single from this year – “The Future Starts Now” – which was released back in August. “The Future Starts Now” is reminiscent of the gleaming synth-pop that Petras has embraced with previous songs and projects, but “Coconuts” embraces more of an island groove. It’s still as dancey as one would expect a Kim Petras song to be, but with an added tropical flare that works incredibly well with Petras’ sweet and sassy vocals.
From the second “Coconuts” starts, Petras paints a picture of the quintessential summer day. The listener is transported to a beachside party where the music is loud, the bikinis are skimpy, and the vibes are immaculate.
The track wastes no time grabbing the listener’s attention, as it opens with the bouncy chorus and only gets more dynamic from there. Lyrics like “look at these margarita-tas!” and “everybody loves the twins!” are far from subtle, but that’s the point. Petras has the swagger to pull off this sort of tongue-in-cheek wordplay, and “Coconuts” shows her using it to perfection. Overall, the track is campy, boisterous, and a whole lot of fun.
Winter might be in full swing, but “Coconuts” has taken us back to the carefree joys of summer and we couldn’t be happier about it. Check out the lyric video for “Coconuts” below and be on the lookout for Kim Petras’ debut album, set to drop next year.
