It’s no surprise that sisters Hannah, Christina and Natalia Morris are members of one of country’s up and coming bands Southern Halo The girls have been taking the genre by storm with sweet spunk, a little bit of sass and some big talent.
The Mississippi trio released their self-titled debut album in 2016 and since then have been making great strides in their music and touring across the pond, making a name for themselves. Their summer-loving sound is featured on Radio Disney and not to mention, they even have their own web series. Sitting down with the girls during CRS (Country Radio Seminar) in Downtown Nashville was just as fun as you would think. They are harmonious in song and in spirit and reflect a wisdom far beyond their years. They are passionate in every aspect of life and it shows in each song and story they tell.
We talked with the girls about their new single “Living Like That”, touring in the UK and much more. Read on below to learn more about the three sisters and don’t forget to listen to their latest single “Living Like That” on Apple Music.
BEYOND THE STAGE: How did you all get started in music and how did Southern Halo become what you are today?
SOUTHERN HALO: We grew up in Delta, Mississippi and growing up we were constantly surrounded by bluegrass, great musicians and songs. That all transpired into this big dream of wanting to play music together ever since we were little girls.
All of our different personalities fit the instruments that we play. Christina, the middle child has this wild personality, which makes her perfect for the drums. Hannah has a very laid back personality, so she fits great with the bass and Natalia plays the guitar and loves to keep the flow of the band going. It’s a great a balance.
BTS: How would you describe your sound?
SH: Our sound is pop/country/rock. If anybody ever comes to our shows, they’re in for a big treat. We have so much fun with our sound and performing for our fans. With all of our different genres in the band and different personalities, we all have different influences that add a lot to our sound. We love Nirvana, ‘Nsync, Justin Bieber and Keith Urban. We bring out our own influences in the band, and that’s what makes us Southern Halo.
BTS: You guys have a brand new single out called “Living Like That”. What’s the core message in this song and what does it mean for you guys?
SH: We are so excited that we got to release this song in the beginning of 2017. The song is all about letting your hair down, having fun in life and not letting any obstacles get in your way.
BTS: You all just announced a March U.K. tour. How excited are you? Do you have any fun plans to do while you guys are over there?
SH: This is going to be our very first time in the U.K. and we can’t explain how excited we are about this tour. Our European fans are loving this new album that we released and we wanted to go over there and thank them ourselves. As far as plans go, we plan on meeting all of our plans and we want to see anything in London and shop. Shopping is important.
BTS: Not only are you guys killin’ it with your new single and touring in the U.K. you also have your own web series on Radio Disney. Can you fill us in on that? How did that all get started?
SH: We decided as a group that we wanted to film a series that shows a day in the life of Southern Halo. Every one also asks us how three sisters function in a band while taking on a music career. We did two webisodes and Radio Disney Country partnered up with us and it’s been a great partnership and we are so excited about everything they do for us.
BTS: You guys also have a radio show. What’s that been like?
SH: When we released our very first album, we started doing radio tours. When we got to know all the radio DJ’s, we realized how fun it was to do radio. We love to talk and we love country music, so we decided to do a radio show called ‘Hanging With Halo’.
BTS: What’s been your favorite part of everything you three have accomplished so far as a band?
SH: When we performed at the Ryman Auditorium here in Nashville. It was an incredible experience and it felt like we were making history. Everyone dreams of playing that stage, so the fact that we had the opportunity to do that was a dream come true.
BTS: You all have opened up for some pretty big names including B.B. King, Maren Morris and Brantley Gilbert? What were those experiences like? What’s the best advice you have gotten from those you have performed?
SH: We got to play for B.B. King for his birthday homecoming in 2012 and in 2014. When we met him the first time, we were speechless. Opening up for him was so magical. When it comes to advice, the main thing you should always keep in your mind as a musician is to stay grounded. There is a never a point in your career where you are going to complete or master your profession. You will always grow in what you do and always have fun with it.
BTS: If you could put an entire tour together, you being the headliner, what would your ideal lineup be?
SH: The Band Perry and Little Big Town would be crazy cool.
BTS: What’s next for Southern Halo?
SH: We have a new music video for “Living Like That” and we’re so excited about touring in London. We’ll be making a few more trips to the U.K later on this year and we can’t wait for everything that’s coming up.
