Duo Nox Holloway is killing it with the releases lately. With yet another banger titled “Pink Cadillac” out, we interviewed the talented two and dove into their musical journey this far.
BTS: How did you two meet/ start working together?
Nox Holloway: We met on our first day of college at Clemson University. We became friends quickly and would always share music/ ask opinions on what we were working on. It wasn’t until sophomore year of college that we became a duo, which evolved into Nox Holloway as we now know it a couple years later.
BTS: What does your name mean? How’d you come up with it?
Nox Holloway: Bryce was studying abroad in London at the top of 2020 and lived on Holloway Road. When the pandemic sent him home early, the first song we made when he got back was our debut single, “Separate Ways”. So, Holloway was a name we liked and it represents somewhat of a turning point in our musical journey. “Nox” we just thought sounded cool on the front of the moniker – it means “night” in Latin.
BTS: What was the process like for your new single “Pink Cadillac”?
Nox Holloway: I (Parker) started with the initial guitar loop and immediately knew it was special. When I sent it to Bryce, he had recently watched the movie Goodfellas which has a few scenes with a Pink Cadillac. This was the immediate inspo, and away we went on a sort of summery, feel-good path. We recorded a lot of the song in my parents’ basement before moving to Nashville early 2021 and kept coming back to it over a year and a half or so. Originally, we left out a second verse for a while and re-recorded the guitars on it two or three times before sending the song to mix in the spring.
BTS: What do you hope listeners take away from it?
Nox Holloway: Hopefully it’s just a fun, energetic ride from start to finish. We want the positivity and feel-good vibe to shine through immediately. It feels like such a summer jam to us and hopefully that’s evident in the song and video.
BTS: Looking back at your debut EP, how would you compare your newer music?
Nox Holloway: We’re always trying to evolve and find what’s next as creatives, especially so early on in our careers. The last EP felt like a project we could look back on and be excited about – it let us believe we’re capable of doing what we want to do musically. Since then, we’ve become better musicians and more experienced performers. Taking that with us, and continuing to go about our process with those perspectives, has yielded a newer sound that feels even more authentic and better-executed than our debut record.
BTS: How would you describe your overall sound?
Nox Holloway: In short, we describe it as “alt-pop”, but we feel like there’s more to be had after that. We try to create immersive songs that can be an escape from the day-to-day, but also love packaging it in an accessible, consumable way. We like to think our music would be easily enjoyed if it were on in the background of a party or TV show, but also if anyone listens with a closer ear, they’ll find stories and moments that are very thought-out and intentional.
BTS: How have your childhoods/ personal lives impacted your music?
Nox Holloway: We both grew up playing a lot of sports. I think we draw on that in different ways. I think one of the most obvious ways that has played a role is the competitive nature we both approach everything with. Whether it’s between the 2 of us or other people in the industry, the desire to constantly improve and be better is a force that’s pushed us since the early days of making music. Passed that, we are both heavily influenced by the music we heard growing up. Bryce grew up a huge hip-hop and rap fan so even with the more alt-pop style, you can still hear that influence in the way he writes a lot of the time. I was pretty far into the percussion and drumline world, and now make rhythmic decisions in our music from those contexts every day.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Nox Holloway: We are always making new music and finding people to collaborate with. Hopefully the releases don’t stop and we continue to get on stage more and more moving forward!
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Nox Holloway: I think we’re excited for people to get to know who we are as creatives and as people. Whether that comes through in the songs, at shows, or even on social media, we hope to keep connecting with people through our music.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to fans and listeners?
Nox Holloway: Thank you to everyone who has listened so far! We love seeing which of our songs people like and what people connect with, and truly appreciate the interactions online. And thank you to Beyond the Stage for coming with great questions. We’re excited to keep things going.
No, thank YOU! We are rooting for this duo every step of the way, and can’t wait to watch them create some more.
