If you haven’t heard of SoCal band Beauty School Dropout, get ready to jam out. With mentoring from blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and support from Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, this killer trio is destined for much greatness.
BTS: How did you meet/ start working together?
Beauty School Dropout: That’s a funny story. Years ago, I (Colie) slid into this girl’s DM’s to hang out and she asked if she could bring her boyfriend, Beepus… Long story short I ended up falling for her boyfriend instead, and made him join my band. Bardo and I met at a show I was helping throw with Winston House. Our mutual friend was performing and she made the intro. That same week Beepus and I went to Bardo’s for a session and we’ve been in the studio together just about every day since then, which was about 3 years ago.
BTS: How’d you come up with your band name?
Beauty School Dropout: “Beauty School Dropout” was my Grandma’s favorite song from the movie Grease and I loved the way the words rang.
BTS: What was the process like for making your single “Assassin”?
Beauty School Dropout: “Assassin” was one of the easiest songs we’ve ever written. Something about it happened so naturally. We had a call with the 4 Horsemen about the vibe and sound we wanted to achieve for this track – Bieber-like hooks with massive guitars. They had the initial concept of writing about an assassin; this vice or person who is terrible for you, but impossible to escape. From there, the rest of the lyrics poured out in the following hour and we fell in love with the track.
BTS: What was it like filming the music video?
Beauty School Dropout: Filming the music video was a pretty surreal experience, being able to direct some of our biggest childhood influences as cameos in the video. All around the energy was great and we had such a blast shooting the performance shots.
BTS: What is it like working with Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz?
Beauty School Dropout: Like I said, its been surreal! They’re so supportive of all our ideas and are some of the kindest people we have had the pleasure of working with. We still giggle like little girls whenever we are around them because it’s so hard to believe we get to work with some of our biggest musical influences.
BTS: How would you describe your overall sound?
Beauty School Dropout: Sticky. Heavy. Loud.
BTS: How have your childhoods/ personal lives impacted your music?
Beauty School Dropout: Massively. Everything from our upbringings have impacted the way we move as a band. All of us grew up playing in bands and were fortunate enough to have parents who were supportive of our passions, which is probably one of the main reasons we were delusional enough to forfeit ourselves to a life full of making music.
BTS: What should we expect from you next?
Beauty School Dropout: A lot! First and foremost, new music. We have another single dropping next month with an EP to follow it up. We play Reading and Leeds in August, then hopefully are hitting the road soon after. Expect more music, more shows, and all around shenanigans.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Beauty School Dropout: Definitely shows. There is nothing we love more than traveling the world, playing our music for people.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to fans and listeners?
Beauty School Dropout: Shoutout to all the Dropouts. This is a space for you to be your true self, whoever that is. And thank you for allowing us the space to do the same. This movement would not exist without you! Great things are coming <3
