Brooklyn’s Anna Shoemaker is back with more music, more style and more spunk! We sat down with her to discuss the latest happenings in “her world”.
BTS: What inspired your latest single “I’m Your Guy”?
Shoemaker: I wrote it with my friend Richie and I think it was inspired by this idea of unconditional love and being there for someone. We’ve been working together for a while, and I started to date his best friend. We were talking about it and I guess it’s kinda about him. It could just be about love for anyone.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
Shoemaker: I’m pretty sure we wrote this one in their studio in Soho, all on guitar. We got it done in a day then went back and did some finishing touches. Then I sent it to my friend Josh who mixed it.
BTS: What about your debut album Everything Is Fine (I’m Only on Fire)?
Shoemaker: I made it over two years – it was a lot of growth. I went through a lot of heartbreak and there’s a lot of growing from that. I was creating for such a long time – one thing I’m obsessed with is writing. I love that it’s a little all over the place and I feel like that represents who I am.
BTS: What’s your favorite song on the album?
Shoemaker: It changes all the time. I think the one that felt the best to write was “Change My Mind”. I wrote it so fast – it’s about getting comfortable in your own skin and realizing you can’t control your own fate. You don’t have to let everyone into your life. I just got out of a toxic relationship and was like wow, I’ve come so far. It’s cool to care about yourself. This was me taking back my power – I feel like I did that halfway through my album.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Shoemaker: It’s whatever I’m feeling in the moment so it probably changes a lot. I like making my music sound the way it should make you feel – that’s a really cool thing. My sound is all over the place.
BTS: How has your life influenced your music this far?
Shoemaker: I’ve always been making music. I started poetry when I was really young in my diary at age, like, 12. I didn’t grow up with anyone in music, and I never met anyone else that wanted to be an artist so it was interesting when I started writing with other people. I always kind of kept it to myself – I created a world in my own head.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Shoemaker: I think getting to build a world of my own. Writing music, making the visuals, dressing the way I want to dress… it’s having the freedom to be who you want or wish you could be. I put on a better version of myself – a cooler, confident version.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Shoemaker: I’m working on a new project that I’m really excited about. My last project was written during the pandemic and took so long – it feels good to start from the ground up.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Shoemaker: I’m really excited to play more shows! Hopefully I’ll go on tour soon.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Shoemaker: Be on the lookout for new music!!!
