“Catholic”
This was never an easy song for us to write or perform, lyrically. It’s probably one of the deepest songs on the record, and the emotion that we feel when we rehearse it is very real. It’ll be interesting when we start playing it as part of our live set… We wonder, how many people will connect with it? How many people will take offense to it? Will it resonate in a positive and productive light? It isn’t meant to be a bash against Catholicism or any other religion. We support anything that helps someone strive to live a better life and be a better person. We’ve simply seen too many examples in our personal lives where people use religion, specifically, as a social crutch, or as an excuse to act superior over others who aren’t religious. Some people claim to be something that they really aren’t, but think that as long as they identify with “Catholicism”, or some other form of religion, that it cleanses them of any wrongdoing or sin… It doesn’t.
Stand up for what you believe in, but don’t push it on others and don’t use it as an excuse to talk down to people who don’t identify with any specific religion. Your behavior is what matters and ultimately decides how those around you with perceive you and remember you. Watching someone grow weaker and more shallow as a person as you grow older is incredibly difficult, especially when it’s someone so close to you, like a friend, family member, or someone who you look up to. This song is meant for anyone who has had an experience with someone like this. This song is meant to help you cope with the pain that you’re feeling. This song is meant to provide some form of release or therapy. This song means so much to us, in the best and worst ways, and we hope listeners get some sort of substance out of it as well. We all have unique perspectives and experiences on situations like this. Don’t hold them in. Share your story with someone. We promise that someone out there is listening.
