We were so delighted to be able to speak with the incredible trio of musicians, Your Grandparents, as they released their newest music video for the song “Tomorrow”. The group is made up of vocalists, DaCosta and Jean Carter, as well as producer, ghettoblaserman. You can check out our interview below as well as their newest music video which they wrote, directed and produced themselves!
BTS: Can you tell us how you guys got started with making music?DaCosta and Jean Carter started rapping together in middle school and ghettoblasterman started producing around the same time. We didn’t actually get together to make music until high school and we made our first song in DaCosta’s Grandma’s house.BTS: How would you describe your sound to those who have never listened before? We have a truly unique sound and between the three of us we blend genres seamlessly.
BTS: Who and what are some of your biggest inspirations?
Marvin Gaye, The Fugees, Erykah Badu, The Gorillas, and so many more. The list is long.
BTS: What is your creative process like in the studio?
It looks a lot like 3 homies chillin. Usually we make music at ghettoblasterman’s house so we don’t rush and usually there are friends around. Our best ideas seem to flow when there’s a good conversation in the room or a good movie on.
BTS: What was it like working with UMI on your song, “The Only One”? How did the collaboration come about?
We met UMI through friends that went to USC back in 2017. Working on “My Only One” with her was a pretty simple process. We don’t exactly remember how it came about, but we had a couple sessions to have her record vocals on ‘Sweeter Things’ and another song that didn’t make it on the EP.
BTS: Who would be your dream collaboration be with?
Our dream collabs would be Outkast, Pharrell, Rick Rubin, Kendrick, Gorillaz. Definitely more on the list though.
BTS: What was the inspiration behind the music video for your song, “Tomorrow”?
Old Kung Fu movies were the inspiration. For this specific video, the Last Dragon was our main reference. We have also each spent a good amount of time doing martial arts, and Jean Carter loves his nunchucks!
BTS: What is a fun fact that you would like to share with our readers?
DaCosta can hold his breath for two minutes. Very fun. He doesn’t do it often because it feels bad for his brain.
BTS: What does the future hold for Your Grandparents?
A lot of cinematic experiences in both the audio and visual realms. And the release of our debut album.
Your Grandparents are set to release their debut album in early 2021 and we are so excited for it!
