Psychedelic trio, .wavrunner, is full of energy, fun and groovy bangers. The three boys – Jack Wesley, JJ and Griff – bring all the vibes into their music and wherever they go.
BTS: How did you guys meet/ start working together?
Jack Wesley: We’re brothers! One year apart. So that’s how we met… And Griffin is my best friend… we met in 3rd grade. From then on, we’ve been buddies.
JJ: I started making beats in 8th grade; I ended up showing Jack and Griff and they really liked them. Jack would freestyle over the tracks – so we started making songs together.
Jack Wesley: Yeah, that’s pretty accurate.
BTS: What does your name mean? How’d you come up with it?
Jack Wesley: It took us a while to come up with it, but we like it. A wave file is the highest form of audio you can download, so it just made sense.
JJ: Also, make waves… don’t ride them.
BTS: What was the process like for your latest single “Camera Shy”?
JJ: I made the beat – there were originally more parts, but we trimmed it down. We had a guy help us out named Matt Kahane. We were going going for some group yelling vibes in there.
Jack Wesley: The premise is you’re with a girl; she’s beautiful but she’s camera shy. You want to show her off, but you can’t.
BTS: What was filming the music video like?
Jack Wesley: We had a few hours to film. Our boy, Drew, went into the woods and filmed us. We wanted to make it seem like we were hiding from paparazzi and just messed around.
JJ: It was pretty low budget…
Jack Wesley: More like no budget.
BTS: How would you describe your overall sound?
Jack Wesley: Funky, psychedelic hip hop. You just have to listen to get it.
JJ: All the beats derive from songs I’ve heard in the past, ranging from 50’s to now. The great Leonardo da Vinci once said, “The best artist is the greatest thief!”… I think he said that.
BTS: How have your childhoods/ personal lives impacted your music?
Jack Wesley: Lots of psychedelics, lots of nature. We love nature and breathing in fresh air.
JJ: I had a teacher that made a big impact on me; I probably would’ve never made beats if I hadn’t met him. I was also kick ass at saxophone.
Jack Wesley: I do the vocals, he makes the beats. We’re more digital – we’re a bunch of electroheads.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Jack Wesley: Greatness.
JJ: We have a new song in pre-production – it’s our first take on a love song. We’ve leveled up our skills and creations.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
JJ: Just making music, doing shows, and getting bigger and bigger.
Jack Wesley: Yeah. Bigger venues, more fans… sharing our joy with the world!
BTS: What final message do you want to send to fans and listeners?
Jack Wesley: Be your own person. No matter who you’re listening to, if the music makes you feel good then it’s doing its job. We don’t make music to keep someone sad; we make music to make someone happy.
JJ: And also, make waves… don’t ride them!
We can’t wait to watch .wavrunner make some waves.
