Beyond the Stage got the chance to catch up with one of our favorite alt-pop groups TWIN XL, after our last interview with them back in 2019. Lead vocalist, Cameron Walker-Wright caught us up on all things TWIN XL and let us know what the entire group has planned for the rest of the year. Read on for more.
Beyond the Stage: We last talked to you in November 2019. Safe to say a lot has happened since then – what has changed in the world of TWIN XL during that time?
Cameron Walker-Wright of TWIN XL: I feel like a lot has changed. Obviously not being able to tour and work together in person has been a bummer but we’ve still managed to grow and keep things moving forward by releasing more music and videos and stuff. We are definitely keeping ourselves busy.
BTS: Have you been writing more during the pandemic/in quarantine? If not, how have you been keeping busy?
CWW: Absolutely, I’ve been writing almost every day for the band and lots of other projects such as Little Hurt and American Teeth. I go crazy if I’m not like, constantly doing something so I like to keep my schedule packed.
BTS: You released a new track, “Slow Heart” — what was the inspiration behind the track?
CWW: We’ve been making a conscious effort to dig a little bit deeper lyrically. This is probably the most vulnerable I’ve ever felt while putting something out into the world but it also feels like something that had to happen. Sonically this is a departure for us, it’s a little bigger and a little more experimental. It was important for us to break out of our comfort zone a bit.
BTS: Do you have a favorite line or part of the song?
CWW: “Tragedy, that I’m just trying to love you so hard” – to me this line is self-reflective in that I’m talking to and about myself.
BTS: You also made a video for the “Slow Heart”. What was that experience like?
CWW: The video for “Slow Heart” is probably our most epic video to date. We shot it over the course of two days and we had such an incredible team working on it with us. We really wanted to drive home that idea of the song feeling like this long confession of all of my downfalls. That’s why we went with the dark sort of “funeral” theme. To me, it’s the death of the old us and the start of a new era.
BTS: Is there more music on the way?
CWW: Absolutely. We are constantly working on new music and pushing the envelope as far as what we can do and who we are as a band. We have a lot of new stuff that I’m really excited about and currently making plans for more releases.
BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
CWW: Honestly, I’m just excited to get back on stage. It’s been over a year and I miss the real-life connection we have with our fans. That first show back is gonna be epic.
BTS: What are you listening to right now?
CWW: I’m really loving the new I Don’t Know How But They Found Me album. Lately, I’ve been really digging Silk Sonic as well. I’m always looking for new music to help inspire.
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
CWW: More music, more videos. I’d love to do a proper full band live stream but more than anything I hope we can get to a point where shows are safe again and we can get back on stage in real life soon.
