Nashville’s own Thomas Day has had quite the journey to fame, and not in the way he expected. Day started playing football at a young age and was on the path to college recruitment. But things took a major turn when his passion for singing overpowered his love for ball.
BTS: How has your childhood/ life influenced your love for music?
Day: I’ve done music my entire life, since I could remember. My mom did a bunch of musical theater work in NY – she can really sing. I started playing piano when I was 5 and I did musical theater, too. I went to this camp called French Woods. I got super into listening to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, also The Beatles. I listen to them so much. I also listen to Keane a lot. Being around music is what did it for me.
BTS: So, you were on America’s Got Talent. How has life changed since then?
Day: Life changed a good amount. It’s crazy because that was 2 years ago. I went right back to high school and started kicking again. It was fun! Then I started posting. In March, 2019 I had a lot of followers on Instagram and blew up on one post. I woke up to 30,000 followers. And I didn’t even know about TikTok yet. At this point, I was still getting recruited for college football. But I knew football wasn’t my main passion. I started writing songs in like 5th grade and kept posting originals. Record labels were reaching out to me. I just love Arista with everything in me – they signed me in 2022.
BTS: What inspired your single “Wildflower”?
Day: I was in New York, meeting with my label and doing some writing. It was a Thursday morning, and I was leaving my hotel room. There was this girl on a bench. You know when you notice someone and they notice you, but you don’t know how to like, say hi? I could see her from my peripheral. There were so many different ways to get to the location I was headed towards, but we ended up walking the same way for like, 30 mins. And we knew we were right there, not in a creepy way haha. But I saw she was listening to music and she was listening to a sad playlist – it was like “i love you” by Billie Eilish. I was like damn… I stopped at the door and she kept walking, waved, and then I never saw her again. It was really sunny out. She was pretty and sad and I never saw her again – I knew I wanted to write about that. I was listening to “Daylight” by Harry Styles and that inspired me, too.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
Day: It was really natural. I met with Pom Pom and Jesse Fink – it was the first time I met them. The second I walked into the room, I told them the story and we wrote the song. Started playing on guitar and the melody just came to me. We cut some vocals and then I left for the airport. It was a solid vibe.
BTS: What was shooting the video like?
Day: It was fun. It was also very hot that day, I was sweating like crazy. I was there with some of my best friends, and the girl in the video is a really good friend of mine. There’s this one scene where Gracie drops a plate and shatters it – she felt so uncomfortable and she hates acting and I couldn’t keep a straight face haha.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Day: Some of these songs are really fucking sad. But I don’t know how to describe my sound yet – I’m still working. I like to say it changes a lot, as it should. At the end of the day, I just want it to be surprising for the listener every time.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Day: Writing songs and performing.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Day: Oh my gosh. The music after “Wildflower” – it’s like shitting on “Wildflower.” The next music is so good. Like SO good.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Day: Shows honestly. And releasing more music! I’m also addicted to buying candles… So I’m excited for more candles.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Day: I’m so happy that they are able to listen to my music with an open mind. It’s not always the best to be this vulnerable with music, but I share my music with people and they care to listen. I love them so much. And I am literally nothing without them. I mean yeah, I’m human, but my career is nothing without them.
Day is just getting started. With his charm, talent, and bubbly personality, he is bound to steal the hearts of everyone that listens to his music. He even serenaded us mid-interview!
