After the release of their latest single, Beyond The Stage had the chance to chat with The Ones You Forgot about the single, their rise in music and their plans for the rest of the year.
Read on to find out more about The Ones You Forgot and their latest single, “Desensitized”.
Beyond The Stage: How did the band come to be?
The Ones You Forgot: Matt and Ferd knew each other and were looking for someone to sing on the covers they would play casually. Jenna shared mutual friends and decided to come over and jam when they invited her over. A lot of time was spent just hanging out together and always talking about starting a band. One day it was just like “Hey, let’s just do it!” So the rest of the lineup was brought in, and friendship naturally blossomed!
BTS: What is the significance of the name The Ones You Forgot?
TOYF: The Ones You Forgot was chosen from a big list of names and phrases that Jenna came up with. She wrote them all down on paper simply because she liked them, and The Ones You Forgot was the one that everyone agreed with!
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
TOYF: rock/pop punk. A bit of a mixture of fun and upbeat vibes, with sometimes dark and serious themes.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musical or non-musical?
Jenna: Musically I am influenced by various women in music, City & Colour, and playing live in general. Non-musical include being outside/in nature, journaling, and storytelling through movies, books, video games, etc.
Matt: I grew up listening to classic rock and metal music. Slipknot was a band that really made me want to learn guitar. I didn’t really have the desire to play in a band until I started going to more shows and seeing bands like A Day to Remember, and The Wonder Years. I also find influence through video games and more recently cooking.
Lance: My earliest influence to start learning an instrument and start playing back in the day was Metallica. I remember my mom showing me ‘Death Magnetic’ back in 2008 and that took me down the rabbit hole of music and eventually got me playing in bands, as well as learning and writing music!
Ferd: Musically I’m influenced by my older brother, Sum 41, All Time Low & Paramore. Especially my brother and Sum 41 since they’re both the reasons why I even picked up a guitar in the first place.
Justin: My earliest influence was classic rock. I was highly influenced by classic rock drummers John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Neil Peart (Rush), etc.. In my teenage years I feel in love with more metal styles and was highly influenced by Matt Greiner (August Burns Red), Matt Halpern (Periphery), etc.
BTS: Your latest single, “Desensitized” just dropped on Feb. 5th — what was the writing process like for it?
Jenna: Ferd starting writing the music and sending us little teaser clips in our group chat. We were so stoked to hear the rest and pushed for him to keep it up. After he sent us the completed song I started writing lyrics and spilling out a lot of things that I felt like I was bottling up. It was a very cathartic writing process for me and I’m so happy that it happened.
BTS: Are you planning to release a video to go along with the new song?
TOYF: We sure are!
BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
TOYF: Seeing the country, meeting new people at shows, and trying all kinds of different food!
BTS: Who are some of your favorite artists right now?
Jenna: Recently I’ve been jamming a lot of Tom Misch, Kehlani, and Best Coast!
Matt: As of late i’ve been listening to lots of Post Malone, Travis Scott, The Wonder Years, and Bring Me The Horizon.
Lance: The Color Morale, Emarosa, Underoath, The Story So Far, and Paramore!
Justin: Oh God I’m all over the place but lately I’m a big metal kick. But you can find August Burns Red, Darko US, Counterparts, Crystal Lake, Alpha Wolf, Silent Planet, and Spiritbox all on repeat.
Ferd: Recently I have been jamming a lot of Boys Of Fall, The Band Camino and Shaded!
BTS: Anything else on the agenda for 2021?
TOYF: We plan on continuing to write music and (hopefully) gear up for playing some shows!
