Punk star Taylor Acorn has been killing it with the singles lately. We had the pleasure of discussing her banger “Psycho”, her writing process, and her love for the stage.
BTS: What inspired your latest single “Psycho”?
Acorn: “Psycho” was inspired by a past relationship of mine. I was constantly gaslit into feeling like I was crazy for thinking something in our relationship was wrong and made out to essentially be the “bad guy” for ever questioning his intentions. Turns out he wasn’t being honest with me for a long time and I have spoken with so many people who have gone through a similar experience with a partner. I just wanted to write it from a different perspective of “if you think I’m crazy then I’ll show you crazy” except it’s all very hypothetical and fun.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
Acorn: My co-writer had actually brought in the idea of the first verse and at first I was a little skeptical because I’ve never written anything like that before, but I decided to take a chance on it and throw a little bit of my own spice to it and once we finished the chorus we knew it was going to be something special.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Acorn: Every time I try to describe my sound I always preface it as if Taylor Swift, Hayley Williams, and Avril Lavigne all walked into a room to create a human, that’s me. I love how nostalgic the early 2000’s pop punk vibes are and I missed those so much so my music definitely has hints of those vibes as well.
BTS: How has your childhood/ life influenced your music this far?
Acorn: I think my childhood is one of the main reasons why I’m even in music at all. When I was 8 my dad passed away and as a coping mechanism I used to write him letters and in turn started writing poems to him as well which then turned into little songs. I also heavily relied on music to get through a lot of my own personal emotions and situations as well because back then expressing your mental health was not as accepted as it is now. They could put into words everything that I was feeling when I didn’t really know how.
BTS: Who are some influences of yours?
Acorn: I’m super influenced by early 90’s rock, bands like the verve pipe, matchbox twenty, vertical horizon – bands like that but also very much influenced by Avril Lavigne and Amy Lee. They were my two favorite vocalists growing up and listening to Amy Lee is actually how I even learned how to sing!
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Acorn: My favorite part of being an artist I think is the connection I’ve had with people. The last 2 years my career has been primarily online so I relied heavily on the conversations I had with fans and making sure I was as present as I could be on there and we’ve built such a strong relationship. It’s just really cool now being able to show up in person and see them in real life, they are more of my friends than they are fans and I just think that’s really cool!
BTS: What can we expect from your upcoming tour?
Acorn: The upcoming tour has been really great, expect a lot of energy, a lot of fun, it’s just been a really incredible time.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Acorn: I’m mostly excited just to play more shows and meet more fans, I hadn’t been able to do that for so long and so it just excites me to be able to do more of that! More music to come also!
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Acorn: The message that I want to send to fans is that I love them and I’m so thankful for them. We’ve built such an incredible community of people who just get each other and love each other and it’s just really special. I’ll never forget these moments for as long as I live and I can’t wait to see all of you on tour!
We can’t wait to keep rockin’ with Acorn.
