Toronto-based singer, songwriter, and producer sunsetto has been on fire, releasing single after single. We got to dive more into his process and musical journey this far.
BTS: What inspired your latest single “too fast”?
sunsetto: The song started as a voice memo — I came up with the melody and was just banging on my chest to capture the rhythm. At the time I was just starting a new relationship and I didn’t want to take things slow, which is what inspired the lyrics.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
sunsetto: I had a session with Andy Schmidt and Lenno, and when I got in the session I told them I had a voice memo idea. I shared it with them and Lenno basically created an entire beat around it while Andy and I worked on the lyrics for a couple of hours. The final song that you hear now includes the vocals that we recorded that evening.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
sunsetto: I think my sound would be described as alternative pop-rnb. I also like calling it “rnb music for Coachella”.
BTS: How has your childhood/ life influenced your music this far?
sunsetto: I found a lot of my musical influences in my hometown. Country writers from Nashville would often head there for summer vacations and host writing camps there for fun so there were always lots of cool folk and rock bands coming through. The core of all the music back home is good, solid songwriting so naturally, it’s the core of everything I do also.
BTS: Who are some of your musical inspirations?
sunsetto: From a production standpoint definitely Calvin Harris, Johan Lenox, and Jim-E-Stack.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
sunsetto: My favorite part is the creative process. I love starting from nothing and creating something that me and my friends think is cool or catchy. Getting something stuck in your head that didn’t exist before is so cool.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
sunsetto: You can definitely expect a cohesive solid collection of songs, and some live shows.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
sunsetto: I’m excited to get back to LA and reconnect with the writers and producers I worked with last year, and meet some new friends. I’m excited to put together multiple projects and rehearse and perform my live show too.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
sunsetto: Stay tapped in, I don’t plan on slowing down, and there’s big things on the horizon.
We can’t wait to see what sunsetto has in store for us next.
