Meet Skela, a genre defying, female empowerment powerhouse in music. As part of her series 10, we’re giving you an inside look into who Skela is, what she believes in, what her releases mean and more. Read below to get to know Skela and listen to her new tracks on Spotify here.
1. Introduce yourself and where you’re from for our readers.
Hi, I’m Skela and I’m a musician and writer based in Brooklyn.
2. Describe your sound for someone who may not have heard it before.
This question never gets easier. I think it’s a blend of lo-fi pop and indie-alterntive genres. I don’t think it will ever be one definitive sound though. My voice and lyrics are probably the most consistent stylistic elements. People say I talk like I write so I guess that makes sense.
3. Tell us about your current 10 song project!
SO Project 10 is ten songs and ten music videos released over the course of 20 weeks. It’s a countdown. When the 10th song is released – I’m going to unveil a “secret” but it’s a secret project I’ve been working on.
I wanted to build up to telling people about it so I asked my friends for help.I made all of the music and the music videos with my friends. It was all self-funded and it took a small village. I’m endlessly grateful to everyone who was a part of it – because it was honestly one of the most challenging endeavors I’ve ever personally taken on. Obviously financially and emotionally people know why it’s hard being a musician today – but it’s also hard when you’re trying to make something honest and real when everyone is just endlessly talking about streaming numbers and instagram followers. Project 10 is about making art because you want to. It’s about being the kind of artist I wanted to be.
4. What can you tell us about your first two releases, Lacuna and Sailboat?
‘Sailboat’ is an intro song about myself which sounds narcissistic now that I say it – but it’s about me knowing in my bones that one day I’ll find what I’m looking for but by the time I do – I’ll be a totally different version of myself. I’ll be unrecognizable to the people I’ve loved and the people who have loved me. That’s how growing works and it’s ok.
5. What’s something our readers should know about you?
If you like my music then we probably have something in common.
6. What’s something our readers should know about your music and these releases?
There’s seven more releases to go and I grow more terrified with each one.
I heard that it’s good to scare the shit out of yourself. I don’t know though. I think it depends on context, but in this case, I guess it’s good.
7. What do you want your listeners to take away from listening to “I’m Not Hungry?”
You can look within yourself for the change you want in your life – it’s not going to be easy though. You have to break to grow.
8. If you could describe “I’m Not Hungry” using colors, what colors would you see?
The song is me singing every shade of blue I’ve ever seen with my own eyes.
9. How does this relate to your other two releases?
Well the video and song are actually connected to ‘What’s Wrong With Me.’ That music video is coming out at the end of the month though so you’ll have to wait and see just how it’s connected.
