We had the opportunity to chat with alt-pop singer, Shannon K and talk all about her brand-new single that dropped today, “RUN”. We also had to ask her about how she’s passing the time in quarantine and her journey into music.
Beyond The Stage: How did you get started in music?
Shannon K: Being raised in a musical environment, I can say that music had been a part of me ever since the beginning. I’ve always been fascinated by music and the whole feeling of a musician/artist’s life. I’ve been inspired by some of the greatest legends who helped me dig deeper into the world of music and songwriting. I remember the first time I won in a school music competition and from there onwards, I gained the confidence to take my singing further.
BTS: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
SK: I’d say that my sound is Alternative Pop. I do like being versatile though. I like exploring different genres but mainly I like to stick around the Pop or R&B genre.
BTS: Who are your musical influences?
SK: Since childhood, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion and Mariah Carey have all been major influences in my singing, which is why they are my inspiration. They all have so much for me to learn from, and it’s just incredible to see what they can do with their soulful, yet powerful voices. I like Ariana Grande as well. She’s got such a chill vibe and it’s always fun to watch her perform!
BTS: You’re dropping your latest single, “RUN” today, Sept. 18th. What are you most excited about its release?
SK: I’m really excited about the music video because it’ll be the first time that I’ll be showing my Indian culture in one of my music videos. In the music video, you’ll see me in a traditional Indian outfit for the first time. I really am excited to see my fans’ reactions! We filmed the video in Jaipur that is known for its historical architecture and culture. It truly was so fun filming the music video at the Mundota Palace and Fort, which is 450 years old! I really felt like I was some sort of a queen! [laughs.]
BTS: Do you have a favorite line or part of the track?
SK: I really love the hook of the song. The lyrics are very optimistic, and they are inspiring to keep you believing in yourself and show the world who you are.
BTS: What as the recording process like for the single?
SK: It was a blast working with Sean Fischer, who produced the song. I love his style of music. The whole process was completed in a day, which is crazy but I guess when you have the right energy and vibe around, it’s super easy to create! What I love about the process of recording is that I get to be myself and try on new things. Recording sessions are always so fun for me because no one judges you. Instead, we all work as a team and help each other to bring out the best outcome.
BTS: What have you been doing to pass the time in quarantine?
SK: Honestly, it’s been hard trying to pass the time during this crazy pandemic but I have stayed positive and have found ways to keep myself active. If there is anything good that has come out of this for me, it is that I have learned how to cook! I started investing my time in things that I usually wouldn’t have been able to do if I was working. So I went back to coloring, which is my favorite hobby, and I started to meditate to keep my mind calm.
BTS: What do you miss most about touring?
SK: I miss interacting with my fans and hearing their cheers and chants. It truly gives me such a boost and I feel so satisfied when I receive such great responses from my fans during shows. I also miss traveling, as it’s such a fun part of the whole touring side.
BTS: What’s next on the agenda for you?
SK: Well, I recently did a cameo in a feature film starring Manolo Vergara, son of Sophia Vergara. The movie will be released this November, and I’m pretty excited about that, as it is a different experience for me!
