Ronnie Watts has burst onto the music scene with her unique “heartbreak pop” sound. Beyond The Stage had the chance to talk with her about her re-released single, “Famous In California” due out later this week, her upcoming plans and what’s on her playlist right now.
Beyond The Stage: How did your musical journey begin?
Ronnie Watts: I’ve always loved music. I can never pinpoint an exact moment because it’s always been around me. Growing up in a musical and creative household definitely helped shape my journey. Once I really got into songwriting in middle school I knew that this is what I wanted to do forever.
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
RW: I would describe my music as heartbreak pop. With all my songs, even the bubblegum-pop ones, I want them to have that sting to them. It’s a combination of alternative, pop and singer-songwriter influences.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musical or non-musical?
RW: I love Lorde, The 1975, and Taylor Swift to name a few. Every artist I come across influences my music in their own way. Before I write, I always listen to a few songs by other artists before. It always really inspires me.
BTS: You’re re-releasing your debut single on Feb. 5, “Famous in California” what was the writing process for it like?
RW: The writing process really flowed for FIC. I had a very clear image in my head of what I wanted the song to be. I had a bunch of lyric ideas written down already, so when it came time to write it was easy and natural.
BTS: Was it different recording new music during a pandemic?
RW: I work a lot from my home studio anyways, so it didn’t feel too different. For Famous In California, we had originally recorded it at Linden Oaks Studio. For the new acoustic version, I recorded it at home. Having released almost all of my music during a pandemic, I’ve gotten used to my music and the creatives around it being more DIY.
BTS: Can we expect any music videos this year?
RW: Possibly!! I love making music videos, it’s one of the most exciting parts of a release. I think it brings a whole new perspective to the song. It’s a whole different type of art representing the same story as the music.
BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
RW: I’m excited to meet fans! If people know the words to my songs that would be really cool. I’ve grown so much as an artist in the past year but because of the pandemic, nothing around has changed. I’ve been sitting at home in Rochester, so it’ll be really exciting to actually see the impact my songs have made.
BTS: What are you listening to right now?
RW: Last night I re-discovered Rex Orange County! He’s all I listened to in 2018, so it was cool to go back and listen through all his songs again. It just reminded me how amazing he is.
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
RW: Hopefully less Netflix binges and random crafts and more music and traveling!
