This week, we’re getting to know Peppina, a singer/songwriter from Helsinki, Finland. With her indie-pop feel, Peppina is sure to take over the music game soon with her eclectic voice and incredible sound!
Who is Peppina?
I’m a 20-year old singer/songwriter all the way from Helsinki, Finland, exploring the wonders of the indie pop scene in the US as well as all around the world.
For our readers who may not have heard your music, what would you describe your sound as?
As a young artist you’re still developing your sound, and I hope I always will be, but there are some things that already color my music strongly. For me, the song will always come first, the production around it is secondary. I think the most difficult thing in music is to create something that’s simple but has never been done before. That’s my goal in my music, to keep it relatable, keep it simple but always interesting and always, always about things that I believe in and can stand behind.
What kind of music influenced the kind of music you want to create?
I had my musical awakening at the age of 15, when I found Regina Spektor and Yann Tiersen (the composer of the soundtrack for Amelie). Among many specific details that I could ramble about all day, what I think fascinated me the most about them was the fact that to me it felt impossible to put their music in a box, they both seemed to have created their own little genres. They showed me it’s possible to do exactly what feels right, what feels like you, and succeed.
You’re fairly new to the music scene, what makes you most nervous about showing others your music?
It really depends of the “others” and also the music I’m sharing, but in some way it’s always a bit scary. Not only does it take courage to share something you’ve created with anyone, but when you’re working on something that gets shared with the world, there’s also so much work that goes into the music: picking the songs, polishing the writing, recording the tracks, planning the production, getting the right mix, planning the release, designing the right image… Of course you’re nervous whether you made all the right decisions and how will your baby be received. It helps to keep asking yourself: “Am I being true to myself with this music?” If you can keep replying yes, then nothing else should matter as much.
What song do you like the most off of “Follow Your Gravity”?
That’s like asking a mother which one is her favorite child!! But to be honest, I do have the longest history and a special relationship with We Can Go Back Again. That song really changed my life!
If you could create your dream tour, who would it be with and why?
Oh wow. Well I guess it’s no surprise that I’d go crazy to have someone like Regina Spektor on it, just for the sake of hearing her live every day! But really, touring in general with anyone would a dream as is, I can’t wait to get on the road! I guess as long as it stays more or less in the same genre (would be interesting to open for a metal band hahah!)
What was the longest amount of time you spent writing a song?
That’s a tricky one. I think it depends of when would you consider the song to be done – is it done when you have the first sketch of melodies, chords and lyrics on it, or is it done after you tweak the arrangement in the production phase? For myself, if I get inspired and start writing alone, the first sketch comes always very quickly. Sometimes it feels like I’m not even the one who came up with the song, I’m just a vessel that let it out!
If you had the chance to sit on a plane next to one famous musician, who would it be and why?
Once more shoutout to my girl Regina Spektor, because she seems so nice she would probably talk back to be and I’d love to learn more about how she got to where she is and what inspired her to keep creating such amazing music!
If you played in another genre of music, what would it be?
I used to be kinda into hip hop and rap when I was a teen, and I love clever rhymes, so maybe I could be a funny, witty rapper. Maybe not really, but it’s a fun thought!
What’s next for Peppina?
Next for me is new music, new release, more gigs and hopefully more of me in the States!
BTS Rapid Fire:
Current Obsession Song
Unsteady by X Ambassadors
One food you can’t live without
Nothing really, but if something, cheese tortellinis.
Caffeinated beverage of choice
Coffee with milk or a cappuccino
Night owl or morning person?
I feel better about myself when I manage to be a morning person, so trying to be that!
Something you’re horrible at, but really wish you were good at
Cooking, baking and all that jazz. Never made the cheese tortellinis from scratch, for example!
