BTS had the absolute pleasure of getting to chat with Canadian artist, Olivia Lunny. We got to connect with her on all things music, what her latest video was like to bring to life, what’s next on her agenda. Read on for all the details!
Beyond The Stage: How did you get into music?
Olivia Lunny: Growing up my parents always had music playing in the house. When I was around 12 years old I asked my dad to teach me a few chords on the guitar. With those chords, I began to put poems and lyrics to melodies and create songs. Through High School, music also really helped me express myself and navigate the uncertain waters of being a teenager.
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
OL: I would describe my sound as electro-pop with a hint of mellow singer-songwriter that shines through, especially in my acoustic ballads.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musical or non-musical?
OL: When I was a child I loved Norah Jones and Fleetwood Mac. Coldplay will also always be one of my favourite bands of all time. Outside of music, I draw tons of inspiration from my own personal experiences and the physical environment around me. eg. When I’m by myself in the evening, the song I write will most likely sound different from a co-writing session happening during the day.
BTS: You recently dropped your latest single, “Sad To See You Happy”! What was the writing process like for the track?
OL: STSYH came together one afternoon with Shaun Frank, AJ Healey & Jenson Vaughan. We loved the idea of writing a song based on an oxymoron. “Loving someone to death, or being sad to see someone happy”. This concept inspired our song title and hook! When writing STSYH we were trying to capture the emotional roller coaster triggered by heartbreak. I feel the lyrics in this song are very relatable and allow for a playful take on an intense situation!
BTS: Was it different recording during a pandemic?
OL: This session definitely looked a bit different as one of the writers (Jenson) joined us through zoom. Although it did look different, we were still able to work efficiently and have a lot of fun while doing so!
BTS: What was the experience like for creating the video for the track?
OL: Creating art in song and lyric form is one thing, however translating that to a visual form is a whole other challenge. For this video, I combined forces with Louis Browne (director) and let him take the lead on the creative direction. Through many discussions and brainstorming, we were all able to bring this song to life through the video and I’m forever grateful because of that!

BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
OL: I cannot wait to connect with people again through my music. Nothing beats sharing moments with audience members and making those individual memories at shows. Crossing my fingers we will get back to that ASAP!!
BTS: What are you listening to right now?
OL: For the past year I’ve been loving Rufus du Sol, SG Lewis and lots of other electro/chill music! I find it really helps me destress and relax 🙂
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
OL: Wow.. so much new music!! I can’t wait to share my debut album with the world in June!
