Following the release of her song ‘Goofy Pt. 2’, we had the chance to catch up with Costa-Rican pop sensation, MishCatt. After the immense success of her single ‘Goofy’, which crowned MishCatt the most streamed Costa-Rican artist ever via Spotify, pop/reggaeton stars Sofía Reyes and De La Ghetto joined MishCatt in ‘Goofy Pt. 2’. Check out what the LA-based singer/songwriter had to say below!
BTS: What is the music scene like in your birthplace of Costa Rica compared to Los Angeles?
MishCatt: Costa Rica has incredible musicians, singers, and artists in general. So much talent, definitely a great potential to be more developed business-wise. LA is of course one of the centers of the music industry. It’s definitely very different, but I love to go back to my country and do writing camps on the beach or anywhere naturewise, there’s so many amazing places to go and get inspired. Both LA and Costa Rica are important, one is to create and flow, and the other one to get bitten by the sharks in the music industry, jk… But I definitely encourage artists that live in countries that don’t have a developed music industry, to get out and absorb knowledge from other places that are bigger markets and have more potential for global growth. It’s important to know how the music business works, and how other artists become entrepreneurs. It’s vital to not just be an artist, but the boss in your company and brand. Know how everything works, be creative not just in music and lyrics, but also in business. It’s a fun ride when you start learning and gaining “colmillo” how we say, meaning a sharpened tooth.
BTS: You’ve noted your parents as an important influence in your development as an artist, have there been any outside mentors that have helped you get to where you are today?
MishCatt: Yes, my parents definitely were an incredible influence in my development as an artist. They were very encouraging and gave me knowledge in being persistent in something that I enjoyed doing and something that I was good at that created happiness in other people. It’s amazing when, unexpectedly, life connects you with other incredible humans that are part of your growth and self discovery and influences your decisions in life. People that we might never meet in person, but that helped us understand passion through their passion.
Sofia Levander has been an amazing mentor and Godmother in my music career. The music industry can be a dangerous and scary jungle, and sometimes you don’t know how to defend yourself when you feel alone, and also being a woman in an uncomfortable position. She is such an empowered, clever person and has taught me about confidence, about standing up for yourself and maintaining self-respect. No one will save you, you have to be there for yourself. It will never get easier, but you can get wiser in your mind and soul. I’m forever grateful for her guidance.
BTS: What is the ideal place for someone to listen to your music?
MishCatt: There’s never a bad place! But, once I had a funny experience when I was listening to my song Pavo and suddenly an earthquake happened. I’m terrified of earthquakes, but interestingly enough, that song made the moment really fun lmao. So I encourage you to listen to my music or any music you love, in moments that scare you, to make them feel not that bad. Airplane turbulence, anxiety, anything, music makes it better.
BTS: How did the collaboration with Sofia Reyes and De La Ghetto come about for your song ‘Goofy Pt. 2’?
MishCatt: We thought about a collaboration for the original version of Goofy, but then we decided to release it with just my vocals. Around a month later, I got the amazing news that Sofia and De La Ghetto wanted to collaborate. We decided to do a more danceable version with a reggaeton beat and they both wrote their parts of the song, adding in more Spanish, Sofia’s part in the pre chorus, which I can’t get enough of with how much swag it has, and obviously De La Ghetto’s incredible rap, which is insane. We were all so happy how it came together to make Goofy Pt. 2 that much more dynamic and powerful.
BTS: How has the reception been for ‘Goofy Pt. 2’?
MishCatt: It’s been really great! So much support and love from everyone, I really can’t wait to play it live.
BTS: What keeps you motivated as an artist?
MishCatt: There’s so many amazing artists that keep me motivated and inspired to keep creating. I love how other people’s creativity and imagination opens up new doors, and then you discover other worlds that make you want to create as well. I think anytime you get inspired, you should utilize that good feel to create. It’s the beauty of creativity, when you see it in the most beautiful form, it becomes infectious.
BTS: Any artists or songs you’ve been digging lately?
MishCatt: Ivi Pora, he is an amazing producer, singer, and songwriter from Costa Rica. I love his song “Sensible”- a delicious, nostalgic, refreshing, and feel-good song.
BTS: What’s next for MishCatt?
MishCatt: New music coming soon, some delicious collaborations, wonderful videos, and hopefully concerts in the future when things settle down. Fingers crossed for a brighter future next year to bring back some normalcy and intimacy with our fellow humans!
Stay up to date with MishCatt!
