Berkshire, United Kingdom native Michelle Tree, creatively known as Michy Tree, released her independent single “Floating House” on Feburary 26th. The song was written and produced in her bedroom. Tree having one other single, “Cocainelove” shows that she is an artist who is not afraid of growth, and willing to test the limits of sound.
Tree shared with Beyond the Stage (BTS) her musical inspirations, creativity, “Floating House” production, and her exciting future.
Beyond The Stage: Can you introduce yourself?
Michy Tree: Hi I’m Michy Tree from Berkshire, and I’m an indie alternative musician.
BTS: How did you get into music?
MT: I’ve always loved music, but concerts have been the core reason I fell in love. They’ve always burned a deep desire, making me want to learn an instrument, sing, and perform.
BTS: Could you elaborate on the meaning behind your single “Floating House?”
MT: “Floating House” is about my experience living alone in London and how lonely I felt.
BTS: The cover art for “Floating House” is really interesting, what is the creative
direction behind it?
MT: I wanted the cover to be what the song sounded like. “Floating House” is very surreal and soft, and I’ve always loved animation so pairing the two together, personally was the ideal decision.
BTS: What was it like to write, produce, mix and master your own work?
MT: Doing everything myself gives me a lot of creative control. It allowed me to truly express what’s in my head and put it onto the computer. It is challenging at times, but it’s a fun challenge.
BTS: Your song “Cocainelove” has a different sound than “Floating House.” What has being an artist taught you about growing within your craft?
MT: I’ve just always loved making different songs, with different genres that all come together with different aspects. Writing music is so amazing and trying different songs is all part of the fun. I feel like each song has its own personality and that’s what I love!
BTS: As an alternative/indie musician located in Berkshire, United Kingdom, how
would you describe the UK sound?
MT: Variety. The UK is full of so much different and new music, it’s amazing.
BTS: If you could dissect your musical inspirations and compose them into a mood board, what would be on that board?
MT: It would be a huge mood board filled with so many genres and artists! My pop princesses include Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Katy Perry, and I have to have the indie genre with the likes of The 1975 and Declan McKenna. OO and I Can’t forget other artists like Paramore, Grimes, and Kendrick Lamar. It would be just one big music mess!
BTS: Where do you like to listen to your music?
MT: In the car! Best place to have a singalong.
BTS: What is your biggest goal within your musical career?
MT: To release an album and do a full UK tour.
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
MT: I have a show in London on the 29th of May and I will be releasing an E.P. later on this year. Just lots more music!
