We sat down with the lovely Maryon King to discuss her latest single “Boys Will Be Boys”, her journey through Europe, and her everlasting love for gloves. This left of center pop artist is ready for the world to hear what she’s got.
BTS: What inspired your single “Boys Will Be Boys”?
King: I’ve been teasing this song for so long on TikTok. There’s another project I was finishing at the time, but I posted this one and it took off. That’s a super exciting thing. My management decided it was time to release it. Took some time to get it mixed and mastered, but now it’s finally ready.
I think the song is healing. It’s a scream in the car while I drive kind of song. Really liberating. It makes you feel like f**k this guy. Music is healing like that – that’s what I realized in this song. Maybe I can help someone during a shitty breakup. It’s a female empowerment song – a female anthem.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
King: I wrote this song with just females – Gucci Caliente and Sofiloud. We wrote it in 3 hours, all in one day. It’s a female gang. My songs don’t usually happen this fast, but some magic happened. It just came out of us because we’ve all been through the same experiences. I love that it’s an all-female based team – it’s not often we see that in the industry.
BTS: Is there a music video?
King: We are filming it! I’m headed to Sicily to do some shoots. It’s more of a visualizer with some short snippets for promotional content – a lot of creative stuff. My best friend, he’s a photographer, said to come and we’ll shoot some stuff there. I’ve never done a shoot there before so I’m super excited. He is the best photographer and videographer. I’m so excited, I can’t even tell you.
BTS: Tell us about your love for gloves.
King: I’m into gloves, that’s my thing. You’ll see me performing in gloves, doing interviews in gloves, etc. That’s like my second skin. I collect them – different colors, different lengths. I think I have a glove fetish, if that’s a thing haha. I love them so much!
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
King: I’m a left of center pop artist. People liked this song out of the blue – it wasn’t in the plans to release it. We paused my EP for it. “Back to Strangers” will be the first track of my EP. I love pop and all sorts. Dance, pop, left pop, and I LOVE Lorde and Madonna. Madonna is one of my biggest inspirations since I was a little girl. The video for “Hung Up” is the reason I started singing after watching it on MTV. And I was raised listening to Lorde. I also love Tate McRae – she’s super cool. And Florence and The Machine. Adele, oh my goodness, she’s incredible, too. “Boys Will Be Boys”, in particular, is leaning towards dance music.
BTS: How has your childhood/ life influenced your music this far?
King: My childhood… so I was born in Moldova and raised in Padova, Italy. I did all my schooling in Italy. I always wanted to do music but my parents are very traditional and didn’t want to me to struggle since the industry is hard to succeed in. So, I would sing in secret. I’d lock myself in my room, watch Lana Del Rey, and sing. I borrowed money from a family friend to pay for singing lessons. I did this for a year in secret. That’s how I worked on my voice and vocals – it was really tough, fighting to do music. They were supportive with everything else, but that.
Then I moved to London, a city of performance opportunities where I could work on myself as an artist. I went to Westminster University and studied music for 3 years. I took Spanish classes on the side. I was supposed to be a translator – that was my safer choice. I speak 6 languages. But, I switched to an all music focus on my first day and didn’t tell my parents until they found out. Now they accept it and love what I do. I released 3 singles, and want to work in the US. I love the states and I love America.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
King: I love writing music. When I write music, it lets me disconnect. I feel like a lot of fellow artists and writers can relate. You pause time and stop thinking about all else. Performing live is the most rewarding experience – being on stage and sharing something so intimate and personal. It’s like, this is me. You might like me, you might not, but it’s so thrilling. I love the writing process in the studio but also the stage is so cool. It feels like everything is coming together.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
King: I finished my EP and am releasing my song soon! We did all the artwork, mixed and mastered, so excited to release that. There’s going to be a lot of music coming out. It feels like I’ve been hibernating for a while trying to find myself. Now I’m coming out of my shell – a little journey of releasing stuff.
BTS: Are you going on tour soon?
King: No shows or tours yet. I need to have all this music out first, then need to find supporting acts. Trust me, I want to do a world tour. Who doesn’t? That’s the dream. Put me on a tour bus and let me perform!
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
King: I really want to get to the next level. Also, collaborate with other artists. I’d love to see Madonna live! Or collaborate with Lorde. I’m excited for my journey. There’s lots of ups and downs. It’s been a wild ride – from Moldova to Italy to London. I want people to receive the music and just dance to it and enjoy it and feel something. I want that connection with people.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
King: My final message… that this song is going to be f**king amazing! And I want all my girls, my girl gang, to blow this song up. It’s so powerful and empowering. It’s really the craziest female anthem I’ve ever written. I want to say I love them all. And I love the reaction on TikTok. It’s been incredible, really. Especially from girls that can connect and relate. Blow this sh*t up!
