“Epic pop” singer-songwriter, Maddox Jones, from Northampton, UK continues to celebrate his solo debut EP, Headspace. Headspace found its way to #4 on the iTunes UK Singer/songwriter chart and has been since recognized by big radio names such as BBC and iHeart Radio praising Maddox Jones as one of the most exciting new emerging artists of this year.
BTS: Please introduce yourself to the readers.
Maddox Jones: Hi guys, my name is Maddox Jones and I am a singer-songwriter from Northampton, UK.
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to you before?
Maddox Jones: Epic pop music with honest lyrics and swooning melodies.
BTS: What are/who are some inspirations for your music?
Maddox Jones: My inspiration comes from how I’m feeling and what’s going on around me. Since I’ve become a solo artist I am trying to be as honest as possible with my lyrics and the way I approach songwriting and production.
BTS: Your solo debut EP, Headspace, ranked #5 on the UK Singer/Songwriter Chart on iTunes — How did you feel when you watched Headspace climb to the top?
Maddox Jones: It was really exciting. It was a great testament to the power of social media. It was a busy time, posting updates, and watching the momentum build. I’m grateful for having a bunch of cool fans that support me!
BTS: Take me through the process of creating your EP. What/who inspired the songs/project?
Maddox Jones: It all started in January 2020, which seems like an absolute lifetime ago now! Newly single, I felt a bit lost with my previous musical project and felt like I wanted to do something different. I started writing a bunch of songs that had a distinctly more autobiographical feel to them and it just grew into this new sound and vibe. I was talking to my label and talked about the idea of releasing under Maddox Jones, as a solo artist, and it just made sense and felt like the right thing to do. I wrote a lot on the piano at my mum’s and dad’s house and then took the songs to a couple of different producers.
BTS: You used to be a part of playing and collaborating with other bands and artists. Take me through your journey as your own artist. What made you take the step into your own personal musical journey?
Maddox Jones: The last project I was in, Born Stranger, was initially a duo with producer Raife Hacking. He left the project back in 2018 and I continued it as a solo venture for a couple of years. Towards the end of 2019, looking back now, my heart wasn’t really in it. 2020 really has been a bit of a journey of self-discovery for me and that’s shown in my music. The Born Stranger sound was very dance focussed, but I have always written songs on the piano, so this Maddox Jones project is simply me putting more of myself into my music. Taking this step has felt really natural, and in a way easier. When you have that realization that you can just be yourself through your art it can be really liberating, it definitely has been for me!
BTS: How do you connect with your listeners?
Maddox Jones: First and foremost it’s about connecting with my listeners through my music, that’s the reason they are here right? I l got a message the other day from a fan who had heard Headspace on a radio station and loved it so much that she had to search for lyrics online! Made my day. Having social media platforms to share content and show what I am up to is really cool. I like to be able to show people what I’m up to.
BTS: How have you been spending your quarantine?
Maddox Jones: Writing new songs for my next ep and promoting headspace mostly. I made a couple of music videos, collaborated with a couple of new producers, played some gigs on live stream, also released my first podcast episode featuring a guy called Kevin Louis White from LA, really interesting stuff. I was also on the social distancing diaries podcast. I kept pretty busy tbh!
BTS: What’s something readers should know about you?
Maddox Jones: As well as being an expressive romantic songwriter with my heart on my sleeve I also watch football and care about transfer day perhaps a little too much :).
BTS: What does the rest of 2020 and beyond look like for you?
Maddox Jones: I am releasing a new single called “World’s Gone Mad” in early November and then working on a new EP. Create create create is my mantra at the moment. I’d like to be playing live a lot more but it doesn’t look like it will be happening in the near future. Keep an eye on my social media for updates and really appreciate the support guys.
