Meet Mabes, the singer-songwriter from Essex. She’s paved her way through the musical world and we got the chance to talk with her about her writing process, her influences and of course, how’s she has been keeping herself busy during quarantine.
Beyond the Stage: How did you get started in music?
Mabes: I had always been obsessed with poetry at a young age – mainly because of my Dad. Then I heard Laura Marling’s ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ album at the age of 15 and that inspired me to pick up the guitar and start putting poetry to song…. and it went from there.
BTS: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
M: I would like to say it’s honest, relatable, catchy, fun, and sad. I’m not afraid of any angle at this point.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musically and non-musically?
M: Musically, John Mayer will always be an aim. And a God for that matter. Lyrically too, along with Laura. But I am honestly inspired lol the time by catchy melodies – genius masterpieces that stick in your brain like pritt stick.
BTS: What’s your recording process like?
M: Intense…. don’t get me wrong, I get so buzzed when I’ve written a new song, but as soon as it’s done it’s on to the ‘moment’ production ASAP – so I can properly capture what I’ve heard in my head.
BTS: You released a video for your new single “Caught Up” recently. What was the writing process like for that track?
M: Honestly?…. it was the first song I wrote post-lockdown and it wouldn’t have happened with anyone else other than my go-to co-writer / producer Matt Newman. It was the first writing session we both had in months and the song spilled out of us in an hour. MAGIC!
BTS: Do you have a favorite line from the track?
M: Dreaming of a day; when I can let my hair down and lay my head down on you…
BTS: Can we expect more music soon?
M: I have so much music to come, next year can’t come soon enough…. did someone say ALBUM????
BTS: What have you been doing to pass the time in quarantine?
M: I’ve taken the time to work on myself and my personal challenges. Harder than ever but we’re getting there…
BTS: Anything else exciting coming up?
M: I’m releasing some Christmas tunes very soon!!! 1 cover and 1 original, I hope it will get everyone in the spirit, whatever 2020 Xmas looks like.
