Lulu Simon is bursting with pop princess personality. We got to know the young artist on a deeper level, and fell in love with her new EP Muscle Memory.
BTS: What inspired your EP Muscle Memory?
Simon: Muscle Memory was written really as a means of processing a lot of changes I was going through: losing friendships, losing myself, finding myself. And giving myself permission to be sad that sometimes the life you’re comfortable with gets ripped out from underneath you and it’s okay to not be ready for it.
BTS: What was the process like for creating it?
Simon: I wrote most of these songs by myself, sifting through my feelings, using the music to express myself in a way that I couldn’t quite do otherwise. It was really cathartic to write those sadder songs, and also really cathartic to write songs like “All In”, which I cowrote with Alex Koste and Eden Neville, because I don’t often write fun and easy songs to party to. I, like, only write songs to cry to in a convertible, you know?
BTS: What’s your favorite song on the EP and why?
Simon: I think my favorite song on the EP is “Already the End”, because I think it’s the most vulnerable track I’ve released so far, and it feels nice and almost relieving to expose myself like that.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Simon: I like to call it “sensitive pop”, because there are all of those classic sonic elements of pop, combined with my more foundational elements of a singer-songwriter.
BTS: How has your life influenced your music this far?
Simon: I mean basically everything I write is the product of some kind of life experience. I don’t know that I would be able to write any of the music I’ve written if I hadn’t lived the life I’ve lived thus far. I think as I’ve grown older too, especially, I’ve stopped writing in a point-the-finger accusatory way, and started to write from a more introspective place, which has really helped me to see and accept myself as I am.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Simon: I just love being able to make music. I feel so lucky that music is a part of my life and that I am able to create and express myself in this way. I really don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t. Writing songs to express yourself and emote is like keeping a diary on steroids.
BTS: Who are your inspirations, musically?
Simon: I absolutely love Carly Rae Jepsen, she is my QUEEN. I also love Kim Petras, The 1975, No Doubt, Queen, Taylor Swift, of course. My inspo is all over the map, really. I feel like it’s really difficult for me to listen to any music at all and not feel at least a little bit inspired by it.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Simon: I’ve already got another EP in the works! Slay!
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Simon: I’m just excited to keep releasing music, to keep sharing my sound. I’m excited to eventually guest judge on Rupaul’s Drag Race. I’m putting that out into the universe in no uncertain terms right this very second – this is manifestation at WORK, people.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Simon: I think I would just like to say thank you for listening. It really means everything to me that people take the time to listen to my music and hopefully enjoy it and I hope I can continue to feed you hahaha.
We can’t wait for her to “feed us” more music!
