We had the chance to catch up with New York based producer and song, Lucian, following the release of his new single, “Fools” featuring Bella Musser. The future bass artist has found massive success with his remixes of Black Coast’s “TRNDSSTR” and Alessia Cara’s “Here”, which have amassed over 200 streams collectively. His new single, “Fools” features a moody instrumental paired with a glossy vocal performance from Bella Musser. Check out what Lucian had to say below –
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music yet?
Lucian: I would say it’s definitely song / vocal forward arrangements that are always intricate and unexpected at times, jumping from electronic to indie and lo-fi sounds.
BTS: Bella Musser’s vocals in “Fools” pair beautifully with your tight future bass sound. How did that collaboration come about?
Lucian: I had reached out to Bella to hear different concepts she was working on and really liked the writing in Fools, I thought that a dark / moody instrumental would really pair well with the story of a lustful romantic chase.
BTS: Years before your career as a producer, you were a part of the indie duo Rifle Men, what led to the dramatic shift in sound?
Lucian: That was definitely my first foray into production and writing and that time a lot of bands like MGMT, Kings of Leon and Fleet Foxes were dominating the music world, half a decade later DJs like Avicii and David Guetta were transforming the landscape of pop music and while bands definitely exist today, it’s certainly a different dynamic than back then.
BTS: Expanding on that last question, do you still make indie music or have any ambitions in doing so?
Lucian: I actually really love all different types of music and produce hip hop as well as indie productions for artists, it’s a bit of challenge on my own project as I tend to be all over the place genre-wise, for example this month I’ll be releasing an ep called pink and blue with Jade Alice under this project which is sort of vintage meets lo-fi / bedroom pop so yea I’m always jumping sounds because frankly I get bored doing one thing.
BTS: Do you have an ideal space or time to create music?
Lucian: I do, I work out of a project studio as most creatives do today and I work full time on it so I’m always working on projects in house. Sometimes I do sessions outside of my space, but most is done at home.
BTS: Do you have a tried and true process for creating music, or is every song unique in its creation?
Lucian: I do find myself working arrangements from the ground up around a vocal, even when I have a demo to start, I usually strip all the music and build a new arrangement around the vocal. This is not always the case and I guess it’s just about the vibe I’m feeling and trying to find the best pairing of instrumentation with the songwriting / vocal idea.
BTS: Any music or artists you’ve been digging lately?
Lucian: Yea I really love a lot of bedroom pop like Still Woozy and Homeshake, I like lo-fi artists like eevee and Wun Two, the list is definitely very long, I think I just like new sounds and new trends and I do believe electronic music is due for a renaissance in a big way sometime this decade. Not to say it’s gone or not an active scene, just that there will be a moment when something left field transforms the space, much like Skrillex and Flume did a decade before.
BTS: What’s next for Lucian?
Lucian: Trying to make super special moments on records happen and create things that people want to play over and over / basically classic records. Of course this is easier said than done, but just trying new sounds and listening to new things everyday is key to this, nothing happens overnight in my experience.
