Pop-rock star, Laraw, just released a new single titled “Scissors” and we had the pleasure of chatting with her about her musical journey this far. There is no doubt big things lie ahead for the edgy artist!
BTS: What inspired your upcoming single “Scissors”?
Laraw: My tragic love life… it was my first week of actually writing with people. I was traveling by myself for the first time. I was reflecting on a relationship and wrote the song with my friend Derek. There was crying, yelling – it was an intense session. We wrote the song and then I came back to Canada and broke up with my boyfriend. It was also my birthday… So yeah! Great week!
BTS: What was the process like for creating the song?
Laraw: We wrote it really fast – it was therapeutic. I felt like it was right to capture that moment of anger and sadness. The final takes were the demo. We kept all the vocals from the same day of recording.
BTS: What can we expect from the music video?
Laraw: I co-directed it! It’s bloody and it’s dramatic. It’s coming out the same day as the single release and I’m very excited about it!
BTS: What was it like for your last single “This is How I Lost My Friends”?
Laraw: I released that one during COVID – it was a really hard time. I had a lot of time to reconsider choices I’ve made. It was a spring cleaning of all my friends… this is a really important song to me.
BTS: How would you describe your sound overall?
Laraw: The way a soundtrack changes throughout a movie, that’s like my music. It’s happy, it’s sad – my songs are a reflection of my movie, my life. That’s the best way to say it. Sometimes my music is more rock, sometimes it’s more indie pop. It’s always changing depending on my mood.
BTS: How has your life influenced your music this far?
Laraw: My name is Lara- I’ve always been a video game, sound production kind of girl. I made some tunes with friends for fun, released them on Spotify, and the rest is history! My parents love music, but they sing really badly- that’s always been the joke in our family. My mom is from Morocco and my dad is from Lebanon, but I was born here in Montreal! I’ve always lived a pretty peaceful life; I’m a very chill person. I carry a journal with me- my music is just chapters of my life with true stories.
BTS: What’s your favorite part about being an artist?
Laraw: Getting to tell my stories in a fun way! Writing and making music is how I express myself. It feels good to release my emotions and that’s honestly why I do it. I like that I get to share my life experiences. It starts with me, I let people in, and we create something beautiful.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Laraw: The more I write, the more excited I am to release an album or work of art. I have a lot of songs – I don’t even know what I’m going to do with all of them. But everything I do is leading up to the moment I can get on stage. I’m really excited to perform more. I would love to go on tour if someone will take me – I’m small and funny!
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Laraw: I do art because it makes me happy and it’s a way for me to release all my emotions so I’d like to remind people that if you’re not feeling good there’s a way to release those feelings. It’s okay to feel like shit – I always feel like shit. Just write songs about it! Peace and love baby, nothing else to add.
We can’t wait to see and hear more of Laraw’s incredible art.
