Psychedelic and passionate, Junodream feels like the indie band of the future. The London based band made waves with their 2018 single “To the Moon” as well as their two 2019 EPs, and continue to do so with their atmospheric new single “easy life.” Their delicate blend of palpable atmosphere and intense emotion has led the band to all sorts of praise, including being named by The Independent as one of their 15 bands to listen to in 2020. We were lucky enough to chat with Junodream about how they started making music, their musical goals, and what the rest of 2020 holds.
BTS: How would you describe your sound for those who might not be familiar with you?
Junodream: Space Rock.
BTS: Where did the name Junodream come from?
Junodream: It was inspired by a Pink Floyd b-side called ‘Julia Dreams’. We then used the old tried and tested method of ramming two words together. The Juno part comes from one sexy looking synth (which none of us actually have). We have a list somewhere of other horrendous name suggestions, think ‘Deed of the Frog’ came close.
BTS: How did you start making music together?
Junodream: We were friends growing up in our early teens. Persistence and a lot of failing has formed who we are today. That’s what happens to all great people and artists, right?
BTS: You’ve described your music as “bittersweet songs that will help you exorcise your demons.” Has this always been the musical goal?
Junodream: We love to smother happy songs with melancholy lyrics and layer sad words over the top of sad songs. We’re very emotional.
BTS: What inspired your new single “Easy Life”?
Junodream: This track actually came about due to a very sad incident that guitarist Tom went through last year. Rather than keeping its topic we changed its meaning to something less sore and more relatable. The internet is one crazy beast and everyone’s gives their soul to it and so we wanted to address this mass addiction. It essentially follows someone turning into a computer them self in order to live an easy life.
BTS: You’ve recently covered artists like Pink Floyd and Gorillaz. Is there a different mindset to recording a cover versus recording an original song?
Junodream: These are popular songs. Don’t mess it up.
BTS: With a couple of live shows planned for autumn, what will it mean for you to be back on stage?
Junodream: Nerves. Lots of nerves.
BTS: What can we expect from you for the rest of 2020?
Junodream: We have seismic plans for later in the year and beyond. Bigger shows, bigger releases and bigger egos.
