Jennifer Denali is the latest pop powerhouse vocalist and we’re obsessed. We caught up with the New York singer and she gave us some insight on her own journey and some of her favorites in music.
Beyond The Stage: What got you into music?
Jennifer Denali: My mom and dad. My dad plays guitar and works on Broadway and my mom has been dancing and singing with me since I was in diapers. I remember singing on the steps of our building on Bay Ridge Ave, Brooklyn. That was before we moved. I also spent a lot of time with my dad singing on the boardwalk at Coney Island.
BTS: Who would your dream collaboration be with?
JD: I would really like to work with Salaam Remi, I feel like that would bring out a new side to my songwriting and studio performance.
BTS: What was the name of the first song you ever wrote?
JD: I wrote many songs growing up but the first one I ever recorded was called, “Addicted” and I recorded the topline on garage band. It got me signed to a development deal when I was 15.
BTS: Do you prefer touring or recording?
JD: I prefer both, because it means I’m working on connecting with my fans. I want my music and my message to reach everyone.
BTS: What’s a song that you wish you wrote?
JD: So many, but “How Deep is Your Love” by The Bee Gees. I think I would have cried making those harmonies. I love the layers and Barry Gibb’s voice is heavenly.
BTS: Who are your biggest musical influences?
JD: Madonna, Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse
BTS: What’s the best part of songwriting?
JD: When you’ve “got it.” When the whole idea comes together it’s the most satisfying, exhilarating feeling. I had moments in the studio where my producer and I would have the same thought at the same time and freak out.
BTS: What city haven’t you played that you really want to?
JD: I would love to play in London. They have such amazing talent there and my best friend lives there!
BTS: What’s your favorite song/album right now?
JD: I really like what Charlie Puth is doing right now. He’s glossy.
BTS: What’s next on the agenda for you?
JD: Releasing tons of music, touring and collaborating. Just staying grateful for every opportunity. Thank you guys!
