Get to know If Walls Could Talk, an alternative pop-rock band from Detroit, Michigan. We spoke with Nick and Tony from the band to learn about the deluxe edition of their album, their influences and their dream tour lineup. Check it out below!
1. How and when did the band start?
Nick: Tony, Steve, and I were all in a pop-punk band years ago coming out of high school. We went our separate ways going into college, but we all eventually came back together with our other members and created a band with a new sound and a new purpose. We all wanted to make music, and we all wanted to do it as seriously as possible
2. How would you describe your sound?
Nick: I would describe our sound as alternative pop rock. We are admittedly all over the place sometimes, throwing in our influences of Queen to Twenty-One Pilots. Our writing sessions are… interesting, haha! But, we always end up back with alternative pop rock.
3. Can you talk a little bit about your single “Static?”
Tony: Static has a different sound than the rest of the songs on the EP. It’s aggressive and raw. It was written when I had a falling out with a close friend of mine who slowly became no longer part of my life. This fact is evident in the song when I sing “Slowly you’re fading out” near the end. Personally, it’s one of my favorites because it allows me to express myself in a fulfilling way. I also really enjoy being able to rap in the song.
4. You just released your album, “What Would They Say Deluxe Edition?” Can you tell us a little bit about that?
Nick: Sure! Two years ago we released the initial EP, and it was the start of something huge for us. We took this EP so seriously and it’s taken us on an incredible journey so far. But within those two years, we’ve changed a lot as musicians, performers, and people. This EP allowed us to showcase some of the growth we’ve made as a band, both musically and professionally. With releases like Static and the acoustic live reduxes, we strive to show our musicianship and bring our fans new content to enjoy.
5. What was the first concert you ever attended?
Tony: The first concert I ever went to was a Coldplay concert during their Viva la Vida tour. It was at DTE Energy Music Theatre and I even remember the date: June 2nd 2012. It was quite a magical night and I even remember writing a song that night when I came home. It definitely played a major role in my life by inspiring me to write music.
6. What is your current guilty pleasure song?
Nick: My guilty pleasure in general is Carly Rae Jepsen. No shame. My favorite song is probably “This Kiss” by her.
Tony: Three songs come to mind when I think of guilty pleasure music: “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None The Richer, “Lovefool” by the Cardigans, and “No Scrubs” by TLC. Also, I will forever be a T-Swift fan.
7. What are some of your musical and nonmusical influences?
Tony: Some of my songwriting influences include Twenty One Pilots, Coldplay, and Vampire Weekend. I’m also a huge fan of the artist Jesse Cole since he is both a music creator and a writer like me. In regards to my performance, I take a lot of inspiration from Freddie Mercury. Nonmusical influences include Neil deGrasse Tyson and Elon Musk because they are brilliant people who also have a sense of humor.
8. How did the band get the name, If Walls Could Talk?
Tony: I’m the type of person who finds it extremely difficult to say what’s on my mind. This is especially true if it’s something that requires me to open up and be vulnerable. The phrase “if walls could talk” invokes the mystery of what they actually would say. Well, I relate to the walls in this way. It’s almost as if to say, “If walls could talk, here is what they would say. If I could talk, here’s what I would sound like.” This point is expressed through our music.
9. What are your plans for the rest of 2018?
Nick: We’re going to hit the studio hard. We’re currently putting our focus into writing, and we have about 13 songs in progress. SO excited to see what makes the final cut and what we will show everyone!
10. If you could create your dream tour, who would be on the lineup?
Nick: Queen w/ Mercury, Coldplay, and Relient K. Kind of all over the place, but boy I would buy that venue out just to watch it myself!
Tony: Coldplay, Twenty One Pilots, and Imagine Dragons. I have a great respect for all of those bands and think that our styles are very similar. We provide the bridge between the melodic poppy sound of Coldplay and the rawness of Twenty One Pilots.
