This Dallas-based singer-songwriter and producer is dropping in hot into the pop scene with a debut release that’s already garnered over nine million views on TikTok! Her songwriting skills and self-taught production is inspiring and reflects her raw talent.
Beyond The Stage got the chance to ask the internet’s newest It Girl, Hailey Haus, some questions and talk about all things music including her viral hit, “Flavor of the Month.”
BTS: What does “Flavor of the Month” mean to you or represent?
Hailey Haus: This song is a fun and humorous pop song, but the underlying meaning is about taking the power back. A few years back, this girl went behind my back and told people I always have a “flavor of the month.” I wanted to redeem the narrative and use that concept to kind of play into the character that she portrayed me as.
BTS: What motivates you to be creative?
Hailey Haus: I have a drive for creating that seems to not end and is one I truly don’t even understand. I feel there is a void that I am destined to play a part in filling and that is pertaining to healing our world. I really want to help people and see them be set free of trauma. I pray my music could play even a small part in someone’s healing journey; that would be the greatest gift of all.
BTS: Do you play any instruments? If so, which ones?
Hailey Haus: I know the basics and theory of both piano and guitar, but I am taking the time to become more familiar with guitar. I would like to say my favorite, yet most proficient instrument is the computer.
BTS: How did Jon Bellion inspire you to teach yourself how to produce music?
Hailey Haus: Jon Bellion was a huge influence on me in terms of learning how to produce. His work ethic and the way he isn’t afraid to experiment is very inspiring to me. I started learning how to produce a few years ago and have always been drawn to the way he puts things together.
BTS: You’re originally from Oakland, CA and have moved around the country, but are now based in Dallas, TX. How have these changes in location been for you?
Hailey Haus: At times it felt very nomadic like I didn’t truly have a home, and at one point in my life, that was literally true. Living in so many locations has really given me a broad perspective on life. I got to see how big our part in the world really is and just how connected we actually all are. Each place, though, in its uniqueness has become part of who I am.
BTS: What does your songwriting process look like?
Hailey Haus: It first starts with humbling myself and prayer. From there I love to dream, imagining concepts and pictures in my head. I can’t get enough of storytelling; I always want to take the listener to another place. Sometimes I’ll wake up in the night with a lyric or melody. Sometimes a concept will strike me in the middle of Costco. I’ll even start producing a track and the song will find itself in that. Every song has its own journey and reveals itself in a unique way… I live to see that process.
BTS: What are your favorite and least favorite parts about making music?
Hailey Haus: My favorite part about making music is seeing how it is consumed and seeing people connect with it in their own personal walk of life. My least favorite part of making music is that some songs take time to cook.
BTS: How do you overcome creative blocks?
Hailey Haus: I have come to this weird place in my head where I don’t allow space for creative blocks; I literally have chosen to consciously reject them. The number one thing I can say helps me stay in a creative space is being connected to God, the ultimate source of music and creativity!
BTS: How does making music help you in other areas of your life?
Hailey Haus: Without an outlet, it takes me much longer than usual to process certain feelings and thoughts. Writing and creating helps me voice how I truly feel or sometimes how I didn’t know I feel. Sometimes to move forward and not wallow in my emotions I just have to “get it out” by writing about it and having a cry session.
BTS: If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
Hailey Haus: I would love to do a song with Post Malone. I think our tones would go nicely together, but there are truly so many artists I would love to collaborate with!
BTS: Who are some artists that are currently inspiring you?
Hailey Haus: I’m loving Conan Gray’s new album right now. I’m listening to a lot of Bazzi and also love looking at TikTok for inspiration. There are so many talented and creative people on the platform!
BTS: Besides music, what other creative outlets do you use?
Hailey Haus: I am somewhat of a workaholic when it comes to music, so making the time for other things is a personal challenge. When I do allow myself the time, in that I find a lot of freedom. I do really enjoy creating art, painting, doing collages; that’s where I really connect with my inner child. Art was my other first love growing up. I also love to go thrifting and flipping furniture pieces!
BTS: Now that you’re signed with Arcade Records x Elektra Records, what are some plans that you have for the future?
Hailey Haus: We have so much music on the way that I am going to be sharing on TikTok soon! I’m also excited to one day get on the road and play the music live! I’m feeling very excited and content about the future ahead!
With creativity and innovation at the forefront, Haus is destined for greatness. We can’t wait to hear what’s coming next!
