Rising indie-pop star Gwyn Love is a force to be reckoned with. Her debut single “never have to see u again,” which was released today via 604 Records, is an honest testament to calling your own shots and not having to see anyone you do not want to. The catchy hook and ethereal production make her perfect for fans of Sasha Sloan, Bea Miller, Julia Michaels, and Ellie Goulding. We had the opportunity to talk to Gwyn Love about signing to 604 Records, the inspiration behind “never have to see u again,” and what fans can expect from her forthcoming EP.
BTS: Can you tell us how you got started with making music?
GWYN LOVE: I started out playing cello at 5 years old. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I picked up keys and started to write songs around age 11.
BTS: Can you tell us the story behind getting signed to your label 604 Records?
GL: Crazy story actually. I go to school for contemporary music and for one of my assignments I had to reach out to someone in the music industry to interview them. I reached out to a lot of managers of bands I like, [Jonathan] Simkin (CEO of 604 Records) was the only one who responded. I didn’t even know he owned the record label until the interview, we ended up talking for hours. He asked me to send some music that I had written and I did. He liked it, said I should keep working at it because I had talent. Flash forward a few months and I finally got a track of mine produced and sent it to him. He immediately told me he wanted to work with me.
BTS: What has it been like working with them so far?
GL: I loved Simkin from the start, he’s such a funny guy, not afraid to speak his mind. Honestly, every single person I have had the pleasure interacting with at 604 Records has been so encouraging and welcoming. It feels like a family and i’m so honored to get to be a part of it.
BTS: How would you describe your music for someone who hasn’t heard it before?
GL: A blend of punk mentality with electronic pop vibes.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musically and non-musically?
GL: Growing up I listened to a lot of Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, and punk/pop boy bands like Marianas Trench, The Summer Set, and The Maine. These artists inspired me to start writing in the first place, but my sound didn’t fully come together in my brain until I was introduced to artists such as Lauv, Bea Miller, Sia, Loote, Julia Michaels, Alison Wonderland and more.
BTS: What’s your process like in the studio?
GL: In the studio, I like to drink a lot of hot tea. I also really like colorful lights, I vibe more when the atmosphere is vibey. Occasionally I’ll drink a lil whiskey to loosen up. I warm up before the studio, then sing the song a couple times in the mic before recording.
BTS: Tell us about your debut single “never have to see u again”! What was the writing and recording process like?
GL: The writing process for “never have to see u again” collectively probably took 2 hours. Bits and pieces came to me at different times. I tend to brainstorm a lot before actually taking it to the keys and mapping it out. The chorus came to me from a conversation I had with my friend, i was at work and had to go to the walk in to record it on my phone.
BTS: Where did the inspiration for the song come from?
GL: The chorus came to me first and it’s very broad. When I originally wrote the chorus I wasn’t even thinking about my ex. I was thinking about how satisfying it is that I call the shots, after moving away from home, I didn’t have to see anyone that I didn’t want to see. I later decided, after getting a text from my ex, that I was most excited to not have to see him.
BTS: You’re releasing your debut EP this fall – what can listeners expect from the project?
GL: This EP has a lot of emotions. The whole EP stays within the punk mentality + electronic pop vibe. For me, it tells a story. The story of me discovering life outside my hometown for the first time, starting to think for myself, and the beginning of my new life.
BTS: What’s been the most important lesson you’ve learned as an artist so far?
GL: I’ve learned that I can’t take people’s criticism to heart. Everyone has an opinion, not everyone is going to like me or my music and I have to be okay with that. I can’t let it discourage me.
BTS: What’s one fun fact about yourself for our readers?
GL I actually have two: I have flat feet (no arch whatsoever) and double jointed thumbs!
