Here at Beyond The Stage, we had the opportunity to catch up with singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Grace Gaustad recently and we got to ask her everything from signature sound, her new EP, Welcome to Jupiter 1.0 and so much more. Read on for all the details!
Beyond The Stage: How did you get started in music?
Grace Gaustad: Music has been the love of my life since I was a little girl, so I suppose the only correct answer to this question is that it’s something I’ve always loved as far back as my memory can go and so I’m not sure I ever really started. It’s just always been a part of me.
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
GG: I would describe my sound as infectious pop production paired with honest lyrics and complex melodies. I’m a storyteller at heart and that shows throughout my music as well. Almost every song I’ve ever written tells its own story.
BTS: Who are some of your musical influences?
GG: There are far too many to name but if I had to pick a few I would say, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Frank Ocean and Michael Jackson.
BTS: You recently dropped a video for your latest single, “Freedom” — what was the process like for making it?
GG: The process was awesome. I live for making art with my friends, and Benny Gagliardi, who directed the video is one of the most talented guys I know! We shot the whole thing in one day in downtown LA and had a blast doing it.

BTS: Your EP, Welcome To Jupiter 1.0 just came out. What was the writing and recording process like for it? Was any of it different given the pandemic?
GG: I only worked with two different producers for the EP so we kept our circle very small. Luckily for us, we were able to work virtually which was definitely challenging but it forced us to find new ways to stay creative and productive. I think a lot of the EP was inspired by the crazy times we’ve been living in and I’m not so sure it would have all come together the way it did had things been different.
BTS: Do you have a favorite track and/or line from the EP?
GG: My favorite song is ‘Freedom’ and my favorite line is ‘I miss Arizona where big dreams meant nothing.’ I think it really captures what adulthood feels like when all of a sudden for the first time in your life, all the dreams you had as a kid begin to feel like real possibilities if you work hard enough for them.
BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to tour again?
GG: There is nothing like the energy of a live crowd. It brings music to life in a way that nothing else can and so I can’t wait to get back on stage, but also I have so many concerts I want to go to!
BTS: What artists have you had on repeat recently?
GG: I’m constantly listening to music and I would say recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Lifehouse, Katy Perry and Bon Iver!
BTS: What does the rest of 2021 have in store for you?
GG: I’m super excited to put out what will be my debut album, BLKBX. I’ve spent so long making it perfect and I’m just elated that it will finally be out in the world soon.
