We sat down with artist Goldie Vargas to discuss her latest single and exciting journey, thus far. This ray of sunshine is sure to brighten anyone’s day with her sweet smile and heartfelt music.
BTS: What inspired your single “Moving in Reverse”?
Vargas: I wrote it during the first week of the pandemic – I needed a way to channel all my confusing feelings. We were all so confused. A year later, I returned to the song when I was going through a difficult time. It blew my mind how it related to the problems I was currently facing.
BTS: What was the process like for creating this song?
Vargas: I recorded it with my producer, Adam Gurr. It was just him and I in the studio, tinkering around. I came with the song completely finished – the chords were all done. He’s an amazing producer and he’s so so sweet.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Vargas: I think my sound is a mixture of pop and rock – a lot of classic rock influence. I love Stevie Nicks, The Stones, David Bowie… But, Adam is a great producer and balances me out so I sound more pop.
BTS: How did you start working with Adam?
Vargas: Adam is my number 1 guy, he’s like my brother. His wife gave me a tattoo when she was pregnant, like about to pop. I told her I was a singer/ songwriter so I met Adam, and we started making music a week later. I was the last person she tattooed before giving birth. Their child kinda represents the span of time I’ve worked with Adam, which is pretty cool.
BTS: How has your life influenced your music this far?
Vargas: My dad was a huge fan of classic rock. He influenced a lot of my sound; I listened to his music all the time. Also, this is gonna sound so funny, but Hannah Montana! I used to watch her all the time and she had that pop diva influence on me. I love Miley Cyrus, too. I knew I wanted to do this from a young age. I would play my mom’s piano and my parents put me in lessons when I was 5. I was in a little kid band from 14-17 and loved performing!
BTS: Is Goldie your real name?
Vargas: My name is Gabrielle, but people started calling me “Goldie” because I was super blonde and really tan – they said I looked golden. It just followed me everywhere!
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Vargas: I love creating and making people feel less alone with my writing. The community aspect is so beautiful. At shows, it’s a communal experience of people coming together for the same reason.
BTS: What should we know about your debut EP?
Vargas: I wrote and recorded it in summer 2020. It’s like a chapter of my life, for sure, written in a cute little EP. Each song is a little anecdote of what happened to me during that time. It touches on relationship issues and insecurities about that. I released “Strawberry Kisses” – that one I love, and was so happy to release. It’s the first song I wrote about sex. As a woman, it feels so strange to write about sex without being too revealing.
BTS: Do you have upcoming shows/ tours?
Vargas: Yeah!!! I am going to play a couple shows at the end of June. I’m going to start doing more shows in July, around LA for now. Hopefully I’ll tour soon! But I’m very excited for the LA shows.
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Vargas: Definitely touring. That’s the number one thing I’m excited for. Also, being able to write a lot more albums. I really want to write my first full length album this summer. And seeing people’s faces – I love meeting new people!
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Vargas: You are not alone, even with the good and bad portions of life. You always have someone there and people can always related to you.
Vargas is helping us feel a little less alone with her kindness and musical messages, and we can’t wait for more!
