flowerkid, the alias for Flynn Sant, is a new and exciting Australian talent signed to Atlantic Records.
flowerkid is only 19, but the lack of years does not equate to lack of experience. With his new song “It’s Happening Again” feat. KUČKA out, flowerkid sits down with BTS to talk about his musical inspirations, aspirations, and favorite artists.
BTS: How did you choose the name “flowerkid?”
flowerkid: Flowers represent my growth – as I will never stop growing (as long as I take care of myself). Attaching ‘kid’ to ‘flower’ was me keeping my promise of staying compassionate and loving, no matter what my age is.
BTS: For those unfamiliar, how would you describe your music?
flowerkid: Brutally honest, timeless story-telling! People like to say ‘I feel like I’m floating’ after hearing it 🙂
BTS: Who would you say inspires you musically?
flowerkid: Frank Ocean, BROCKHAMPTON and Vancouver Sleep Clinic.
BTS: Which artists got you through the pandemic?
flowerkid: BROCKHAMPTON, Dua Lipa and Vancouver Sleep Clinic
BTS: You have a project coming up and are promoting it with the single “It’s Happening Again” ft. KUČKA. Can you tell us what the song and the overall project are about?
flowerkid: ‘It’s Happening Again’ in simple terms, is about the universal feeling of losing control. Sufferers of mental health often describe this feeling as similar to falling, or drowning. But as an artist with a platform, I wanted to help as many as I can. To do that I created a self help body of work for my listeners… Hopefully it pays off.
Anyways, ‘It’s Happening Again’ is the first step, and there might be two more steps afterwards!
BTS: Do you have a favorite lyric from “It’s Happening Again?”
flowerkid: ‘Let’s talk about me’ and ‘i said i’d never love me’
BTS: How would you describe your experience making this project?
flowerkid: This experience had so many beautiful moments. The crew and everybody were so incredibly helpful and sweet. Can’t wait to go there for this mysterious project…
BTS: How would you describe your creative process overall?
flowerkid: It starts with a feeling and then I can feel the lyrics buzz around my brain. I either grab the instrument of choice, or sing it into my phone, or jump straight into logic because I can hear the song finished in my brain. So by the time I reach releasing the song, I am in love with it and the music hits so much better.
BTS: What is the hardest part about making music?
flowerkid: Comparing your work to your idols. It will always crush your self esteem before it nourishes it.
BTS: You’re a trans artist. Do you have any advice for other trans musicians trying to make it in the music industry?
flowerkid: Place your boundaries early. People will treat you very differently unless you know what you want. You are a human, not a robot <3 Don’t push yourself too hard.
BTS: Do you prefer Australia or the United States?
flowerkid: I’ve never been to the US, but at some point I’ll hopefully get to go 🙂
BTS: What is it like being so young but already being signed to a record label with a growing music career?
flowerkid: It can have its bad moments, where I feel so overwhelmed…But seeing my career and how many incredible people I get to meet, being an artist is the best part.
BTS: As tours and concerts start up again, do you have any plans for in-person shows?
flowerkid: Absolutely. Bigger shows too 🙂
BTS: What is the best thing about your fanbase?
flowerkid: They all love me unconditionally, no matter how long it takes for me to get back on track. I love them very much!
BTS: What are your musical aspirations for the future?
flowerkid: To collaborate with Finneas and to sell out a huge concert!
