Throughout this week, Montreal musician Flore Laurentienne will play a number of concerts across the United States and put a bow on his ongoing tour. Just over a year ago, Lauerentienne released a record called 8 tableaux, and has had the chance to perform it live ever since.
Laurentienne, the artistic moniker of musician Mathieu David Gagnon, has described his live shows as a chance to step into a world where music and nature intertwine. He calls this current run of performances a rare and intimate experience across stunning venues.
For those unacquainted with Flore Laurentienne’s work, he’s been releasing full-length albums since 2018 and appeared on KEXP just after 8 tableaux was dropped last March. Watch that performance below. A full list of Flore Laurentienne tour dates can be found at the bottom of this page. Ticket information is available here. Get To Know Flore Laurentienne:
Beyond The Stage: Your newest record 8 tableaux has been out for just over a year…how are you enjoying its success?
Flore Laurentienne: It’s always fascinating to see which piece resonates the most with listeners. It’s usually not the one I expected!
BTS: The deluxe edition of this record was shared late last year. It featured a few new songs. Talk about those extra tracks that weren’t included on the initial album release.
Flore Laurentienne: I’m really happy with the orchestral version of La nuit bleue. The piece can be played by any instrumental ensemble, but I think this particular version stands out beautifully! I’m also quite pleased with Anticosti. It was originally written for piano, but I re-recorded it using a Yamaha CS-50. This synthesizer is one of the most expressive ever built.
BTS: This is your second tour in the United States within the last few months. How do you enjoy performing in this country? Are there unique parts of touring outside of your native country?
Flore Laurentienne: It’s always a great experience to see the reactions of an audience that has never been exposed to this kind of music—especially this type of performance, with a chamber orchestra and synthesizers. Hearing feedback and critiques from a different culture allows me to see certain aspects from another perspective, and of course, that helps us grow as artists!
BTS: Some might argue that your current home in Quebec and near Montreal has one of the best music scenes in the world. Why do you enjoy being based there? Does it benefit you as an artist?
Flore Laurentienne: Absolutely! Many extraordinary musicians live there. However, I actually live in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, about four hours from Montreal. I find peace and simplicity there, which is essential for my creative process.
BTS: You’ve stayed quite busy recently. What do you have planned for the rest of 2025?
Flore Laurentienne: I’m always working on new music, so probably another album!
BTS: What other messages do you have for fans right now?
Flore Laurentienne: From chaos, harmony is born.
