After dropping his newest single “Feel the Same,” Daniel Javan took the time to talk to BTS about his creative process, musical inspirations, and personal identity.
Read on to learn more about the up-and-coming singer, and what 2021 has in store for him.
Beyond The Stage: Can you introduce yourself?
DJ: My name is Daniel Javan and I’m a 17-year-old kid with an international background being Persian, Danish, and Swedish. I also speak 5 languages and in my free time, I make music whenever possible from the comfort of my own bedroom.
BTS: How would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
DJ: I would say that in general, I may be a little shy when I first meet people, but once we break the ice and I get to know you, I’m down to earth and really love interacting and learning.
BTS: How did your musical journey begin?
DJ: The start of my musical journey has 2 parts. The First was about 3 years ago when I began taking an interest in singing and playing the piano. I started making music and learning how to finetune my singing. Then, a little over a year ago was when I actually started making original music. I was at a point in my life where I had a lot on my mind and began to write my thoughts down and mold them into lyrics. Eventually, using my musical skills I was able to turn my lyrics into full songs.
BTS: In 3 words how would you describe your music?
DJ: Meaningful, emotional, true.
BTS: You just released your single “Feel the Same”, could you give a little explanation of what the song is about and where its inspiration came from?
DJ: “Feel the Same” is the realization you may hold when you’re in love, but you’re not sure whether the other person holds similar emotions. These emotions cause you to reminisce and think, “what if she doesn’t feel what I feel when she looks into my eyes.” The inspiration for the song grew from a few months ago after I had just started hanging out with this girl at school. Eventually, I too experienced the same emotions previously explained. After our interaction, I went home, took a warm shower, and the lyrics started popping up in my head along with the melodies. By the time I came out of the shower I had already completed the song. So I got on my phone, wrote down the lyrics, recorded the melodies in voice memo, and then started making the chords on the piano, and BOOM the song was completed.
BTS: Can we expect to see a video for “Feel The Same?”
DJ: I actually haven’t made any music videos so far. With Covid and my current resources as an independent artist, the end product wouldn’t be too strong. However, if enough people want a video then it’s definitely a possibility in the future.
BTS: If you were to create a playlist, what artist would you add?
DJ: Definitely XXXTentacion or Juice WRLD.
BTS: What’s something that helps you to be creatively inspired?
DJ: Taking a shower. I swear, taking a shower almost always helps me come up with something. Apart from that, just living life in general. Rather it’s interacting with others, making memories, my feelings, or collective experiences, these are the bases for my music. Which is kinda sad because you don’t get as much of that as usual because of covid.
BTS: Can we expect an EP or album in the near future?
DJ: I really hope I’ll be able to drop an EP soon. The main reason I haven’t is that I want to give every single song of mine everything I have in terms of promoting it, etc. As an independent artist, it’s harder to promote and make sure everyone hears my music when it’s multiple tracks at once. I want to keep building my relationship with my fans before I give them a larger project, so if not this year then I’m confident to say next year.
BTS: What are your favorite ways to connect with your listeners?
DJ: Instagram for sure! I can easily share what I’m doing and what’s going on through stories and posts. Fans can easily comment or dm me and we can also have a nice conversation whenever, I really love it.
BTS: What’s the best way for people to keep up with you?
DJ: Also Instagram haha, that’s where I’m the most active. So, if you haven’t followed me already and you wanna keep up, go follow me on Instagram @_daniel_np.
BTS: When it’s safe to tour again, will we be able to see you on the road?
DJ: 100%! I already got invited to do a show with one of my friends once Covid settles down, so I’m really excited about that!
BTS: What is your ultimate goal in music?
DJ: At this point, the goal is to make enough money through music so I can make it a full-time career and spend my life doing what I love. But the ultimate long time goal is to create something that lives on even when I’m gone.
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
DJ: I have no idea, the possibilities are truly endless. All I know is that I’m always working to make new music and make new connections with people. I have set a goal to release new music at least once a month for the entire year, so 2021 has at least 10 more tracks in store for us. So much can truly happen in a year, if you look back a year to January 2020, I had just started my music career by releasing my first song ever and I was at 0 monthly listeners with 0 streams. Now, a year later, I have 96 thousand people listening to me monthly on Spotify alone and that blows my mind, anything is possible.
